Editor's Note
Based on a novel by spy writer John Le Carre, TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY remains one of the most acclaimed British mini-series of all time. Alec Guinness turns in a superlative performance as George Smiley, a former spy who was forcibly retired after an internal scandal in the British Secret Intelligence Service. When it's discovered that a Russian spy has infiltrated the organization's highest levels, Smiley is brought back into service to covertly spy on his former colleagues and root out the double agent. This gripping tale of Cold War espionage was followed by the sequel SMILEY'S PEOPLE.

Unfortunately this capability is mainly wasted now on so-called reality shows or glorified talent contests. The occasional gems produced by cable stations have become fewer and fewer as the years pass. Even British television, once far superior to its American counterpart, is no longer the reliable source for great television it once was....read the full review

Professional Reviews

Wall Street Journal
"[T]he essential drama of this peerless series lies in great acting and a play of intelligence that remains undiminished by time." 12/02/2011

A.V. Club
"[With] interrogations, emotionally fraught encounters between people with secrets, lengthy dialogue-free cat-and-mouse chases, and the like....The miniseries takes its time, attempting to get across the workaday nature of espionage..." 12/07/2011

Entertainment Weekly
"Despite its leisurely pace, TINKER, TAILOR is riveting -- it's an action film of the mind....You won't want this puzzle to be finished." -- Grade: A 03/23/2012
