very good value1/18/2013
great gps very easy to use good value
I had a garmin before and i am no sure than the tomtom i better
Tom Tom is my preference for navigation and this model has performed very well so far. Lifetime Maps should be beneficial. Have had much better luck with Tom Tom than other navigators and so far, this one is performing very well. No issues out of the box.
GPS navigator could have more accurate maps11/26/2010
Gets me where I'm going, and has found local shortcuts I didn't already know. I have noticed several map errors in my local area but the integrated map correction ability promises to correct them quickly. Lifetime free map updates promises to pay for this device quickly, as another brand I checked out charges $80 per map update.
Better than expected9/29/2010
This GPS navigational device fared better than my expectations due to many available options and features. One of the features that impressed me was that it showed when vehicles were at either side of my vehicle in the traffic lanes on the highway. Being so close to the Mexican border, I tested to see if the device would map correctly once in Mexico and indeed the map was accurate. Highly recommend this one after doing my research on others and found this device to be much more affordable and dependable.
It is not a Garmin9/27/2010
This unit is ok, but has issues. 1. The damn volume will not stay put. You need to constantly set it to full, it is very low at the highest setting. 2. Learning curve is long (for me). 3. Does not appear to have a custom screen to change what you see. 4. For a large screen, the information (speed, time, etc.) is much too small unless you drive a rice rocket and have it in your face. 5. In short, it is NOT A GARMIN. 6. The only reason I bought it is the lifetime map update and that has soo many disclaimers, it may not be worth it.
Very good GPS, with big screen9/27/2010
Superior performance. User friendly when looking for POIs. Voice guidance is excellent (minimizes the need to look at the screen all the time). Takes a few minutes to boot up, though.
Excellent GPS over all9/27/2010
this gps has worked very well for me. i have not experienced it making any errors getting me to destination. sometimes it takes a wierd way, but it gets you there. i love the lifetime updates possibility and the fact that you get usa, canada, and mexico(i live near the border). very satisfied thus far.
I'll Go With Garmin From Now On9/16/2010
Decided to try a TomTom but found it not near as intuitive out of the box as the Garmin 265WT I bought to compare it with. My main gripe with this TomTom XXL 540 unit is the fact that once you get a "favorite" entered, the only editing you can do to it is rename it. If you happen to get one number of an address wrong you must delete the whole thing and start over. Also, the list of "favorites" display alphabetically. That might seem right but, I have a few address labels (favorites) that I like to put extras on like an appartment or unit number. This would always display at the begining of a favorite label/name even when it was entered at or near the end of a name. My Garmin 265WT displays these just as they are entered. I’m sending the TomTom back and keeping the Garmin.
After using several other gps, I figured I'd give tomtom a try. While it is easy to use, and has a big screen, it will not get you to your location over 50% of the time. I did the latest updates and it still will have you unable to find most locations. Many neighborhoods at least 3yrs old are not on tomtom, it does not display the speed limits on most major roads(but other brands do). It has many streets named wrong, it shows many roads that do not exist, it shows driveways and power lines as roads(thats how they claim they have a million more miles than others) After many emails to tomtom, they say the problem is with the map supplier, not tomtoms problem! Anyway, the new Garmin gets me to where I am going 99% of the time. Other people I know have these same issues with tomtom, so just beware. ps, it has a lot of other problems, but being unable to find over 50% of locations is a major problem.
