I love this GPS7/5/2013
Compact; Reliable Performance; Easy To Set Up; Large Screen; Easy To Read; Simple Controls; Easy Menus
Reliable Performance; Simple Controls; Acquires Satellites Quickly; Easy To Read; Easy Menus; Compact; Easy To Setup
The 5" screen is great & easy to see day or night. Sound is plenty loud.
I wanted a GPS with a larger screen than my current 4.3". So far I have been really impressed with it. The menus are all easy to understand, it is quick to route and reroute. The voice controls are neat, but I can't use them all that often when the kiddos are asleep. I like the bluetooth idea, but the speaker is not loud enough and where it is mounted on the window makes it too far of a distance to carry on a conversation. The mount is MUCH improved over my last TomTom!!! Plus this 1535 TM model has the lifetime traffic and map updates!!!!!!!
Received defective item.8/10/2011
I received the item which when opened required an immediate update. The update didn't work because there was no room in the memory on a brand new item. Called tech support who determined it had to be returned to them for replacement. When they receive it, they will ship a new one.
Free Lifetime Maps and Traffic Updates!7/26/2011
This big touchscreen display GPS is a pleasure to use. Excellent routing and reroutes automatically without obnoxious commands. I really like the quick disconnect mounting ring and large speaker. You get 4 free map updates per year, Map update takes over an hour, but works if you follow the directions and the suggestions! It does not have a SD card slot, but You can remove the old map folder to create more room for new maps. I highly recommend it!
So far so good
I've only had this item for a few weeks, but I'm loving it so far. I love the combination of features and the fact it comes with lifetime traffic and maps. I had Garmin units previously, but I think I'll continue to be happy with this unit.
Says new, but it may be a refurb.4/26/2011
The unit does not autoplay so to speak. It also stated that the memory is full. Very hard to figure out how to begin using. This appears that someone else may have used this device. Also under their customer support listings this device is not listed. Beach Camera... really closing for ten days due to Passover, who really does that? I am still hoping it works for me. Maybe I can get help whenever Passover is over?
Don't get fooled3/23/2011
Life time maps, 5" screen are the good points. If you need to get to where you are going, tomtom may not be for you. I travel around SC to places that have been there for over 30 yrs, tomtom can't get me to 3 out of 4. Even after latest map updates, and many contacts with tomtom, it still cant get me to most places. I gave tomtom many wrong addresses, they say they will check into it, but they claim its the map supplier's fault? As another reveiwer mentioned, the speed limit function is nice, yet it mainly works only on interstates here in SC(but my garmin shows most all roads speeds) So many streets have wrong names or do no have numbers for them. Many neighborhoods that are 3 to 5 yrs old do not show on tomtom. They show many driveways and power lines as roads(thats how they claim to have a million more miles than other brands). If you have another brand gps or know where you are going, you will find tomtom pickes longer more time consuming routes. I found the unit to have about 1.5 errors every mile(wrong names, missplaced streets etc) As another reviewer mentioned, it has built in memory which is full and no card slot, you lifetime update may be short lived. Time has to be set manually with tomtom, all my other brands do this automatically. Names of streets only show up when you are already at them, then dissapear as soon as it shows it, You will miss many streets because of this. I had to buy a garmin to replace the tomtom. In the 8 months of using both, garmin got me to 99 out 100 places, tomtom got me to about 30 of those same locations. If you have money to waste, get a tomtom.
No SD card slot3/23/2011
I'm satisfied with my XXL 540TM but, had I known that there's only 2GB of memory and no SD card slot, I'd have opted for the XXL 540WTE (which has 4GB of memory), even though I have no need for the European maps. As it is, the US and Canadian maps take up almost all of the available memory. Fortunately, unneeded voices and symbols can be deleted to provide a bit of additional space. Other than that, it's a solid performer, and a good value, especially at the Buy.com price. In December, when I was looking for the same model to give as a Christmas gift, the lowest online price I could find was considerably higher.
Best GPS that I've owned2/19/2011
I have a Garmin, Magellan and the Tom Tom XXL 540 TM. I actually have two of the 540s and I am getting ready to buy a third. They are that good. First, the lifetime integrated traffic. I get free traffic with turn by turn directions on my Android phone with Google Nav but I still like a dedicated unit. I use the phone only as a backup when I don't have a dedicated GPS. This unit has several other advantages: 1. It has plenty of info on the screen. Time of day, ETA, Distance to next turn, next turn street name, Speed, speed limit, and minutes to arrival. 2. It has a speed limit warning that will warn you if you exceed the posted speed limit. The included maps automatically display the speed limit for the road that you are on. This is the only thing that I want improved. You can't set the leeway for the speed limit warning so it will often buzz at 5mph over the limit and I need it to warn me at 15mph over. 3. It is super easy to enter a destination. Only voice input is faster. 4. The traffic reroute can be set to automatic so that you are automatically given the fastest route. You can also set the routing to ask you each time certain routing options. Sometimes I like to avoid expressways so I have it set to ask each time. 5. It uses a standard mini-usb plug to charge but it uses a 90 degree angled plug. A usb mini plug with a big plastic end won't fit. The traffic receiver is also integrated into the charging plug so you need to use the included charger to get traffic. 6. The screen is big and bright and can be easily seen in bright sunlight. Overall, it's a great unit and with lifetime traffic and maps, it's a great value, that's why I bought three.
Wrong, Dangerous Directions from TomTom XXL 540TM1/30/2011
I spent 1 1/2 hours downloading the updates to the maps for my TomTom XXL 540TM before I tried to use it. The first time out I asked the GPS to take me home from one block off the main blvd in Co. Springs, CO. That required me to turn right, then drive about 2 blocks west on the blvd & turn right onto the northbound interstate for 15 miles. After the GPS turned me onto the main blvd in the correct direction, it instructed me to get into the left lane, when in fact I had to be in the far right lane of 3 lanes within about 2 blocks in order to turn right onto the northbound interstate. It never told me to move into the right lane. The second time out, I asked it to take me home again from the same spot with the identical incorrect result. Even worse, when I exited the northbound interstate early(which deviated from the direct route to my home) and turned west to cross the interstate, the GPS took me across the interstate and then instructed me to turn right into the oncoming traffic of the southbound interstate offramp. Logically, it should have directed me to continue straight ahead to get back onto the northbound onramp to the interstate to take me home. By this time, felt that I could could not trust the GPS to give me reliable (safe) directions in an unfamiliar location, and I returned it.
Worked for a week...then nothing.12/31/2010
My unit was difficult from the start beginning with not enough memory requiring me to delete some files. Then there is a message telling me my maps are more than twenty weeks old...but when I try to update them (using the activation coode), a message appears telling me they (the maps) are not currently available. And finally (and I mean finally)...after the first week of operation, the unit will not start up...it appears to be charging, but will not start up.
I'm very satisfied so far with this device; however, I wish I had selected a slightly smaller sized unit since I like to take it with me outside of my vehicle. The connection to the computer was easy to manage. The website had some cool stuff to add (art, voices, other options) if you like to do that kind of thing. I haven't had to download a map upgrade yet, but it automatically checks when connected to the Internet. The suction mount doesn't work very well, but I expected that. Living in one of the coldest states is probably the reason. Maybe it will work when the weather warms up. It doesn't really apply to my van anyway since it is too far to reach to turn the device off and on, so I'll be getting a dash mount. Overall, I like the visibility and the way it works although I haven't done any long trips where I had to totally rely upon the device.
Former Magellan fan12/1/2010
I have always owned Magellan GPS's, and was quite pleased with the routings. However, the map updates were a nightmare and expensive too. I tried this TomTom and love it. The large screen is so nice and the ease of use made the transition a breeze.
This made me a TomTom convert!10/16/2010
In the past we had always used Garmin GPS's, but were not very happy with the routing and map updates on our Nuvi. We tried the TomTom and are VERY happy with it. I just bought a second one. The display is large and easy to interpret. The GPS sensitivity is far better than Garmin. The TomTom even works in parking some parking decks where the Nuvi always failed. Free map updates for life is a BIG plus! We do a lot of Geocaching, and it is very easy to download multiple sets of Geocaches to it and then turn their icons on and off as desired. I will never go back to Garmin!
used it a couple of times felt satisfied with its performance even though it a gave a some weird direction a couple of time overall a decent product
