Customer Reviews of Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo w/ 1080p Upconversion
Although I dreaded the hook-up process, it wasn't too difficult. I used a component cable (not supplied) and the picture is fantastic! While enjoying my old home videos, I haven't yet tried to copy them onto DVD. That was the main reason for choosing this and if I have a problem with that, I'll get back to you.
Very good machine, allowing to record TV the old way on VHS or to DVD; also good for converting VHS tapes to DVD.
Great to transfer VHS to DVD7/11/2012
I purchased this recorder to transfer my remainging VHS before the tapes and the players become unusable. Does a great job and is very easy to use.
Everything about this recorder is great, for what it does. If you are dubbing VHS to DVD, the results are very good. The picture is better than the VHS tape and the audio/video is in sync. The device is easy to use and set up. Just be aware, if you are looking to dub factory made VHS movies to DVD, my experience so far has been that 16 out of 20 tapes have the copyright protection preventing the device from dubbing. I'm not saying this is a fault of the product itself, I just was not aware of how many tapes actually had the protection on them. I thought I would get more done than I have. So if doing this is your goal, there are other solutions you may want to try instead. But if you have video tapes you made/recorded yourself, then by all means, this is a great product to make DVDs from.
Good quality, clear recordings. Very pleased.
Arrived on time, easy to set up, straight forward to use. Overall very pleased. Quality of recordings is great. Very pleased.
I bought this recorder a little over a month ago to transfer about 400 old VHS tapes (some over twenty years old)of cartoons we taped for our daughter. Our daughter is autistic and even though she is twenty four now, she still watches cartoons and these tapes constantly. My goal is to transfer all of these tapes by Christmas. I currently do one each weekday and two a day on the weekends. So far I've made it through about fifty six-hour tapes so on SP mode (you don't want to record at less than that) I've already made about 150 DVDs. So far I've only had two discs fail during recording. The machine works great and has some really nice features. The manual tracking is a really nice feature. Although the autotracking does a pretty good job, some of the older tapes that have been played hundreds of times over the years, benefit from my ability to manually adjust the tracking. The recorder stops the tape automatically once the DVD is filled. You don't have to hang around anticipating the end of the tape. The remote is simple to use and has worked great from all angles in the room(others have mentioned this to be a problem). The dubbing button on the front makes the basic transfer a breeze. The system does have a lot of advanced features that are really cool, but I just wanted to get the videos transferred as quickly as possible. I highly recommend this product and I'll check back in when my mission is complete. If this thing can do 400 tapes, that will be amazing. Here are a few tips I've learned over the years (i've had several HDD and DVD recorders) Always fast forward and rewind the tape completely before dubbing to disc. Use XP or SP mode ... anything else will give you really poor quality (especially if viewed on a LCD or Plasma). After the tape stops when the disc is full, I always like to rewind the tape about fifteen seconds to allow a little overlap just to be sure you don't miss anything.

This item arrived earlier than expected in good condition. As the reviews say, it's pretty easy to use right out of the box. Instructions easy to follow, simple to hook up. As far as recording, it's WAY easier than my previous machine (other brand, 5+ years old that gave up the ghost). Quality of recordings, quite good. Bought it to record shows from T.V., but am looking forward to "dubbing" my old VCR tapes. No issues with remote control. Happy with the purchase.
Love this machine!!!!10/17/2010
An old dvd/vcr combo player I had broke. As I was shopping around for a replacement, I loved the fact that they all now had dvd recorders plus the vcr. I had heard of buy.com from a friend. After reading about the Toshiba, it sounded great plus was very well priced! I received it in only 2 days. It was extremely easy to hook up. Even for those who are not familiar with hooking devices up to the tv, if you take your time and read the manual or just look at the pictures, you can kind of figure it out. It comes with colored wires and if you look at the back of your cable/tv/satellite box and the back of this dvd/vcr, you really just have to match the colors. I record many tv shows and I love the way the dvd, instead of just making noise or saying loading, it gives you the percentage of how long it will take to finish. No matter how fast or slow, really depending on what function you're using the dvd for, it comes in so handy. I love it! My other dvd recorder just says loading and I wait never knowing how long it will be. I think that was one of my favorite aspects to this machine. It's easy to use and if there's something I want to know more about, the manual is extremely helpful. As for the remote, I haven't any kinds of problems aiming at it-it could be the way it's set up. The only thing to be careful with is when touching the remote buttons, they're very soft so you don't need to press down on them hard for it to work or else you might want to make sure the button didn't stay down. But as long as you get used to touching them lightly, it's not a problem anymore. There's so many other cool features I haven't even used yet but am anxious to try it out. I'm so happy with this purchase! I can't imagine anyone not liking it.
Nice piece of machinery. Works great. Great picture quality and lots of input options. Records on my DVD well. Easy to hookup. Only cons is the remote. The infared sensor on machine doesn't work well at an angle. I have to point straight at the DVD player for the remote to work.
