Author Bio
Marilu Henner
Celebrated actress and health guru Marilu Henner was raised in Chicago by her mother, who was a dancer. As a child, she knew that she wanted to pursue acting. She began her career by starring in the first national touring company of GREASE. After her acting debut, she performed in other Broadway productions, television shows--most notably the hit series TAXI in 1978--and over 30 commercials. Between the 1970s and 2000 she also accepted supporting roles in numerous feature films--including JOHNNY DANGEROUSLY (1984), PERFECT (1985), and L.A. STORY (1991)--and several other movies that debuted on cable television, such as John Travolta's CHAINS OF GOLD (1991). In 1994, when her acting career was at a lull, she wrote an autobiographical account about her reaction to her father's fatal heart attack, her experiences of being involved in unhealthy relationships, and her satisfying marriage to television director Robert Lieberman. In the late 1990s, after giving birth to two boys, Nicholas and Joseph, Henner began to define herself as a self-help author with the release of I REFUSE TO RAISE A BRAT, her heartfelt parenting guide. The same year, at the age of 45, she shared her weight-loss secrets in MARILU HENNER'S TOTAL HEALTH MAKEOVER. This first diet book, which encouraged readers to avoid red meat, dairy, and refined sugar products, launched her bestselling series, helping Henner achieve national status as an advocate for healthy living. In interviews, Henner has claimed that her parents' premature deaths, compounded with her college experience of being 40 pounds overweight, motivated her to learn about fitness and nutrition--an educational process that took nearly a decade--and to reveal her discoveries to others. During the early 2000s, Henner lived in Hollywood with Lieberman and their two sons.
