| EMI's three-part Totally Sensational 70's collection highlights many of the decade's more remembered rock songs. Each volume covers a three-year span and features a handful of hits along with a few minor hits from the era. Don't approach the Totally Sensational 70's series expecting an overall best-of. This isn't an authentic look at the decade, or even the rock side of the '70s, mostly because it takes a British perspective. As a result, many stateside listeners may be unfamiliar with many of these songs, particularly the ones that didn't become hits in America. EMI takes a cheap approach, trying to pass this collection off as a decade best-of, when really it's a haphazardly chosen collection that's unfortunately too sparse in terms of quality. Still, most of the songs are rather impressive songs for the era, even if you're left frustrated by the lack of truly big hits. In particular, Totally Sensational 70's: 1970-1973 features a few noteworthy moments: Canned Heat's "Let's Work Together," Deep Purple's "Strange Kind of Woman," Hawkwind's "Silver Machine," and ELO's "Roll Over Beethoven." ~ Jason Birchmeier | |
