Eve Bunting
Born in Ireland, Bunting moved to the United States in 1958 with her husband, Ed, and their three children. She began her career as a writer by taking a writing class at a local junior college. Her first book, THE TWO GIANTS, was published in 1972. In 1976, her book ONE MORE FLIGHT received the Golden Kite Award from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.
"Himler's lovely watercolor and gouache paintings express both the loneliness and hope of the children in scene after scene of the rugged new country. A reminder that the good old days were not so idyllic; this book will have a place in the history curriculum, but it's also an involving read-aloud."
"As in her Caldecott-winning book 'Smokey Night', Bunting reports without judging, ending her central story on a bright note, but leaving readers to think about the implications for others who weren't as lucky."
"Ronald Himler's watercolor and gouache illustrations are not only wonderfully evocative of another time but are emotionally affecting without being sentimental."
From the Publisher
Annotation A picture book based on the true stories of the "Orphan Trains," which from the mid-1800s to the late 1920s transported children from New York orphanages to adoptive families in the West. Marianne is a girl traveling on one of these trains, secretly hoping that her real mother will be waiting for her at one of the stops. As the journey progresses, more and more children are adopted by families along the way...but never Marianne. Will she ever find a family to love her and give her a home? Illustrated with watercolor and gouache paintings.
Editors Note Marianne, heading west with fourteen other children on an Orphan Train, is sure her mother will show up at one of the stations along the way. When her mother left Marianne at the orphanage, hadn't she promised she'd come for her after making a new life in the West? Stop after stop goes by, and there's no sign of her mother in the crowds that come to look over the children. No one shows any interest in adopting shy, plain Marianne, either. But that's all right: She has to be free for her mother to claim her. Then the train pulls into its final stop, a town called Somewhere . . .
