Great trance!

by Gumby on 5/30/2002

This album had me mesmerized the first time I heard it. Good transitions from a master--unpredictable and smooth. Unique blend of old school with new age; truly ecclectic! My favorite artist was Sasha, this album changed it to Oakenfold!

Paul Oakenfold was already a guru of the techno world by the time this 1998 sampler was released, and the deeply textured tracks on TRANCEPORT only served to underscore his popularity. Given that trance (along with deep house) is one of Oakenfold's specialties, it's not surprising that the album is one of the better trance compilations available.
Eleven compositions from the likes of Paul Van Dyke, Transa, Gus Gus, and the Dream Traveler are given the royal remix treatment by Oakenfold. The usual hallmarks of trance--hypnotic repetition, an insistent groove, and anthemic production--are all on offer, yet in Oakenfold's hands the style becomes infinitely more layered and sophisticated, making TRANCEPORT an album as well suited to headphone-listening as it is to dancefloor workouts.
Artist Overview
DJ, promoter, and recording artist, Paul Oakenfold is one of the most popular and successful DJ's in the history of dance music. As one of the chief purveyors of the late 1980s UK rave culture sound--a mix of techno, trance, and house--Oakenfold was involved in some of the scene's most legendary events, remixed a variety of artists, including New Order and Massive attack, and toured with the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, and U2. By the 2000s Oakenfold's iconic status placed him in the Guinness Book of Records as the World's Most Successful Club DJ.
Professional Reviews
Spin (1/99, p.113) - 8 (out of 10) - "...Mixed seamlessly with attention paid to harmonizing keys as well as BPM, TRANCEPORT is both trance primer...and an elegant, euphoric soundstream that stands as its own 73-and-a-half minute composition..."
Entertainment Weekly (1/15/99, p.63) - "...TRANCEPORT is a terrific introduction to both trance and to the burgeoning subgenre of DJ mix albums. Think of it as clap tracks with a heart and a brain." - Rating: A
