Product Overview

This device occupies a single slot in the Point System chassis it is installed in and will fully support all Focal Point management features. The CPSMM-120 has a DB-9 serial interface for the CLI (command line interface) as well as a 10Base-T RJ-45 interface for network management. The CPSMM-120 should be used when the Point System chassis is intended to be used as a stand-alone device (when the user does not intend to stack multiple Point System Chassis' together).

Additional Information Security features of the Transition Networks Point System SNMP Agent: Transition's Focal Point SNMP management platform was designed with several levels of security to ensure that your network is accessible only to those who are authorized. Telnet, HTTP, and SNMPv1, the standard protocols used by the Point System SNMP Agent, are inherently insecure. However, the Agent has a set of proprietary security features that will prevent access by all but the most sophisticated, determined intruders. Passwords / Community Names: "Community Name" is synonymous with "password" in SNMPv1 parlance. Nearly all SNMP systems (including the Point System) have at least two Community Names, each providing a distinct set of read and write privileges. A particular set of privileges is known as a "MIB View." Most systems have a "Private" Community Name whose MIB View includes read-write access to all MIB Variables, and a "Public" Community Name whose MIB View is read-only and is sometimes restricted to a smaller set of MIB variables. FIREWALL: Versions of the Point System Agent published after November, 2001 contain an internal IP filter that can be configured through the CLI command FWALL. Each rule entered into the IP filter matches packets based on source IP address, destination protocol, destination port, or some combination of the three. Each rule also contains a "drop" or "pass" action, making it possible to configure the filter with either a "default accept" or a "default deny" philosophy.

Management Transition Networks Point System products can be managed via the Internet. Web Based Management offers all of the same read/write functionality as Focal Point, but allows the network manager to access their converters with any browser software. Manageable Features: Focal Point software allows the user to enable and disable features incorporated into each of the media converter modules. Features currently available on Transition's media converters include: AutoCross: A feature found on our Ethernet and Fast Ethernet media converters that automatically detects the type of UTP cable that is inserted into the RJ-45 port (straight-through or cross-over). The converter configures the RJ-45 port to either MDI or MDI-x to match the cable type eliminating the need to troubleshoot cable compatibility problems on the copper port. LinkAlert / Link Pass Through: LinkAlert was designed to make trouble-shooting a link failure simple. When the link on one side of the media converter fails it will also shut down the link on the opposite side of the converter to ensure that down link failures are reported properly. Far End Fault: Working integrally with Link Alert, Far End Fault ensures that link failures are reported to all devices on the network properly so that network problems can be diagnosed and corrected quickly. N-Way Auto-Negotiation: Fast Ethernet and 10/100 media converters have the ability to turn auto-negotiation on or off. If the RJ-45 port on the converter is connected to a 10/100 N-way device then auto-negotiation should be enabled to ensure the optimum mode (full duplex) and speed (100Mbps) are engaged. When a converter is connected to a standard 100Mbps device then auto-negotiation can be disabled and the mode can be set manually. It is important that auto-negotiation can be disabled in instances where you are connected to a 100Mbps only device to avoid having a mixed full and half duplex link (an auto-negotiating device connected to a non-auto-negotiating device can result in a half duplex link) Pause: Fast Ethernet and Gigabit converters are designed to allow this flow control feature to function unhindered between devices such as switches that are pause capable. Pause is a flow control option that was designed into high speed networking devices to enable them to alert the transmitting device that the receiving device is being overwhelmed with data. The receiving device can instruct the transmitting device to to briefly discontinue transmission so that it can effectively "catch up". Loopback: This feature is found in our T1/E1 and DS3 converters and it is commonly used to facilitate installation and link diagnostics. AIS (alarm indication signal): AIS is available on T1/E1 and DS3 products and can generate all one's or blue signals in both directions to support diagnostics. Last Gasp: A feature that is incorporated into a select few products that allows the device to send out an SNMP trap in the event of a power failure that notifies the management console of the failure. Power Configuration: When using the redundant power option in the Point System chassis the user has the option of configuring the power in an automatic fail-over or load-sharing mode. This can be done via the Focal Point Software as well as manually. Group Configuration: Focal Point allows you to configure converters in user definable groups or individually. Configuring converters in groups can save you valuable time during installation or when multiple configuration changes are necessary. Power Consumption and Operating Temperature: Critical operational issues such as power consumption and temperature can be monitored remotely as well.
