Jessie Willcox Smith began her career as an illustrator for such magazines as Good Housekeeping and the Saturday Evening Post. She attended the School for Design for Women, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Drexel Institute of Arts and Sciences. Smith was widely recognized for her realistic, non-sentimental, but still gentle paintings of children. She eventually began illustrating books such as Robert Louis Stevenson's A CHILD'S GARDEN OF VERSES and Charles Kingsley's THE WATER-BABIES and her paintings are still popular today.
