Muze PNote Elliott's debut full-length, U.S. Songs, came with a lot of hype in the independent music scene, as their previous single had garnered much positive press. Aggressive guitars storm out of the gates with the track "Miracle," and for the rest of the album, the band never lets up. For individuals wishing to understand indie rock music, Elliott is a worthy point of entry, containing the emotional heights and depths accompanied by the tight musicianship that is expected from a genre known for placing its heart on its sleeve. While U.S. Songs quickly catapulted Elliott to success in the independent market (and their constant touring didn't hurt, either), the sound on this 11-song disc seems safe in comparison with later releases. Containing energetic guitar progressions and striking percussion which showcase drummer Kevin Ratterman's consistent capability, Elliott may be pigeonholed by many as another drop in the bucket, but lead singer Chris Higdon's lyrics are sincere yet obscure, striking while still holding back -- therein showing that Elliott may be more talented than they are given credit for. While the potential for more can be heard on U.S. Songs (and is fully realized on later works), this is by no means a disappointment. ~ Kurt Morris
