| The author of "Something Missing" returns with another hilarious and sneakily profound tale about a man whose behavior is truly odd, but also oddly relatable. |
Annotation:
Matthew Dicks scored a surprise hit with his first novel, 2009's SOMETHING MISSING, about a borderline OCD criminal who breaks into houses to steal everyday items such as toilet paper and maple syrup. Dicks is evidently comfortable in his newly formed niche of fictional neuroses, as he conjures up another psychologically peculiar protagonist for his sophomore effort. Home nurse Milo Slade is so busy concealing his obsessive eccentricities (which involve grape jelly and a certain 1980's hit by German songstress Nena) from his wife that he barely notices her waning interest in him until she asks for a separation. While wallowing in his loneliness and indulging his clients' curious behaviors, Milo finds a much needed distraction in the form of a strange video diary in which a young woman confesses her guilt over the death of a childhood friend. When Milo discovers that said friend is actually alive and well, he embarks on a road trip to set the record straight, but he is soon beset by a series of unusual compulsive episodes brought on by his bold enterprise.
