Product Overview

From acclaimed director Tahmineh Milani (Two Women) comes this searing tale about the struggles of women in modern-day Iran. Poor Sima puts up with her philandering and abusive husband, Ahmad. He is so blatant with his indiscretions that he asks Sima to cover for him when he plans a trip with his girlfriend, Saba. In an Iran where unmarried couples can be arrested for fraternizing in public, Ahmad needs Sima to pretend that Saba is his cousin--a situation that proves both humiliating and dangerous. Marila Zarei (The Fifth Reaction) and Amin Hayayee (Coma), two of Iran's newest stars, shine in this controversial drama. In Farsi with English subtitles.

Review Milani's films are worth defending. Unwanted Woman may not be her best work, but it's an engaging film about relationship struggles -- struggles that hurt both people in a couple, even if one of them is oblivious to the pain.

Review It's hard to fault a film as bravely ambitious as Unwanted Woman for only shadowing its full potential, but this Iranian drama tries to take on more issues than its basic plot can bear. Director Tahmine Milani's tale of Sima, a woman who is both liberated intellectually and imprisoned emotionally, attempts to address everything from poverty to religious patriarchy to crimes of passion -- all wrapped up in one wacky roadtrip with Sima's husband, kid, and her husband's girlfriend...The film's thin writing is repeatedly redeemed by the cultural revelations of the subject matter -- the glimpses of female subjugation seen in casual exchanges are especially poignant and grounding. But while the social subtext lends the film power, the overall simplicity of the delivery undermines that power again and again, from the actors' overwrought facial expressions to Amir Moinie's over-the-top, bludgeoning-you-with-the-suspense-of-the-moment musical score.
