Product Overview

A suspenseful, classic thriller, in the tradition of Alfred Hitchcock, starring Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale, that will keep you on the edge of your seat and your heart pounding! When David (Wilson) and Amy Fox's (Beckinsale) car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, they are forced to spend the night at the only motel around, with only the TV to entertain them...until they discover that the low-budget slasher videos they find in their room were all filmed in the very room they're sitting in. With hidden cameras now aimed at them...trapping them in rooms, crawlspaces, underground tunnels...and filming their every move, David and Amy must struggle to get out alive before they end up the next victims on tape.

Review Vacancy is a nicely compact, tense thriller that loses a little of its punch as a result of a rushed, generic ending. For the most part, the English-language debut of Nimrod Atal (Kontroll) offers a strong sense of atmosphere and escalating suspense. It's more interested in generating dread than offering cheap "boo!" moments and/or splattering the screen with gore...At only about 80 minutes, Vacancy is lean and mean. The film doesn't threaten to overstay its welcome and the quickness with which things are concluded doesn't allow the slightly sour aftertaste to linger. For the most part, this movie hits the right notes and gives its audience a dose of white-knuckle tension. Vacancy offers energy and atmosphere and it may result in departing multiplex patrons paying careful attention to Deighton's advice as they make a nighttime drive home.

Review Vacancy is a stylish, scary, ambitious thriller that recalls not only the original The Hitcher but also some of Hitchcock's work. That's for the first 45 minutes. The second 45 minutes is so routine and disappointing that it's hard to believe it was made by the same skilled filmmakers responsible for the first. Director Nimrod Antal, who helmed the riveting suspense film Kontroll a few years back, is a skilled craftsman with a terrific eye--he has the rare ability to craft images that are original and stylish, but also dramatically purposeful. His lead actors, Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale, are terrific as well, but by the film's midpoint the performers and director feel like they're straining to make illogical situations believable...It wants to be Hostel for nice, respectable folks, an objective that ultimately seems to be rather pointless in spite of the obvious talent behind and in front of the camera.
