It just amazes me that a fine actor like James Woods and a fine director like John Carpenter could make such an awful movie. When I saw this movie I sat there completely stunned at just how bad it was. The cinematography was the best thing about this film and that was nothing special. The visuals do nothing to enhance the film at all, the vampires look plain and generic and have no visual flair at all, just long fangs and black clothing (yawn). The plot is just a standard by the numbers 'kill the head vampire' writing. Once again no imagination involved here at all. As for the acting, well it seems that James Woods has deteriorated in to playing a caricature of himself (ie: and intense, ill-tempored, no-bs taking guy). John Carpenter seems to be just collecting a paycheck and thats all. It's sad really to see how far he's fallen. Go back and watch some of his older movies like, Christine, The Fog, Escape from New York, or The Thing to see how good he used to be.

Beautiful visuals (I love the southwest), good FX. Listen to the music and see if you can see the Dusk Till Dawn influence … Read More

Beats your standard vampire movie by far. Visuals and special effects are superb. Acting is great, Griffith is terrifying. Well worth the time to watch, twice. Read More

Vampires
Editors Note
Note Prolific director John Carpenter takes on the vampire genre in his action-horror film VAMPIRES. Bitter, tough-as-nails vampire hunter Jack Crow (James Woods) leads a specialized team, funded by no less than the Vatican, that is dedicated to destroying the race of vampires that inhabit the earth. The team is successful, and becomes lazy in its success, eventually falling victim to an elaborate ambush set up by a powerful master vampire. Crow and two others of his team are the only survivors, and are determined to get revenge for the massacre. Carpenter takes the genre to new heights with powerful action scenes, nifty vampire-killing weapons and great special effects. James Woods is wonderfully over the top as the head vampire hunter who has no love for the Vatican and a mysterious past that is never far behind him. VAMPIRES is based on the book by John Steakley, adapted for the screen by Don Jakoby. The score is creepy and powerful, a typical characteristic for a Carpenter film.
Plot Summary
Summary The Vatican, aware that vampires are out to put an end to mankind, enlist the aid of a group of vampire-hunters, spearheaded by Jack Crow, to put an end to them. Lots of blood and gore ensue.

Review In a perfect bit of casting, James Woods is Jack Crow, the leader of a team of vampire slayers hired by the Catholic Church... Vampires is a tough-minded movie that doesn't, as Crow aptly puts it, "romanticize the bloodsuckers."... (Director John) Carpenter is great at mixing toungue-in-cheek humor and scares in equal measure...
