|The future of mankind rests in the hands of master slayer jack crow as he moves to prevent the master vampire from reaching his ultimate goal for the legions of undead, the ability to walk in daylight. If you've always bought the myth that vampires can only walk in the dark, you haven't met the master.|
Editor's NoteProlific director John Carpenter takes on the vampire genre in his action-horror film VAMPIRES. Bitter, tough-as-nails vampire hunter Jack Crow (James Woods) leads a specialized team, funded by no less than the Vatican, that is dedicated to destroying the race of vampires that inhabit the earth. The team is successful, and becomes lazy in its success, eventually falling victim to an elaborate ambush set up by a powerful master vampire. Crow and two others of his team are the only survivors, and are determined to get revenge for the massacre. Carpenter takes the genre to new heights with powerful action scenes, nifty vampire-killing weapons and great special effects. James Woods is wonderfully over the top as the head vampire hunter who has no love for the Vatican and a mysterious past that is never far behind him. VAMPIRES is based on the book by John Steakley, adapted for the screen by Don Jakoby. The score is creepy and powerful, a typical characteristic for a Carpenter film.

Customer Reviews of Vampires
Moviephilia plagues Vampires2/22/2000
What a waste of good money invested in this film. The plot never thickened. It did not have any real excitement. Searching vampires in abandoned homes was just too hard for me to keep listening to it. While I do consider Mr. Baldwin a good actor, he certainly wasted his talents on a dumb film. This kind of movie could follow him as a glitch in his movie acting career..
Amazingly bad film considering the talent involved2/14/2000
It just amazes me that a fine actor like James Woods and a fine director like John Carpenter could make such an awful movie. When I saw this movie I sat there completely stunned at just how bad it was. The cinematography was the best thing about this film and that was nothing special. The visuals do nothing to enhance the film at all, the vampires look plain and generic and have no visual flair at all, just long fangs and black clothing (yawn). The plot is just a standard by the numbers 'kill the head vampire' writing. Once again no imagination involved here at all. As for the acting, well it seems that James Woods has deteriorated in to playing a caricature of himself (ie: and intense, ill-tempored, no-bs taking guy). John Carpenter seems to be just collecting a paycheck and thats all. It's sad really to see how far he's fallen. Go back and watch some of his older movies like, Christine, The Fog, Escape from New York, or The Thing to see how good he used to be.
Blood & Guts a plenty11/27/1999
If you like plenty of blood & guts this one is good. Not the best plot or acting, but what do you expect when your trying to save the world from a horde of Vampires.
For Vampire Fans a must see11/12/1999
Not a bad movie. James Woods plays an unusual role but does come across as being a hard edged vampire slayer. The master slayer is scary and exceptionally tall he could take on Tom Cruise and Bradd Pitt with no problem. A must see for horror and Vampire fans alike. Get ready for some blood gushing and bone crushing special effects.
Don't even bother10/16/1999
I just watched this movie last night on HBO and I'm angry I wasted my time on it. The plot is just plain stupid. There's some gore and some T and A shots but the movie's just plain cheesy. Why James Woods agreed to do this is beyond me. He must have had some free time and just wanted to be the main star of a movie, even one as cr*ppy as this.
Do you like them HOKEY? Are you a CORMAN fan?8/25/1999
This movie is stupid. The plot is contrived. The acting is pretty bad. But it's fun. Lots of vampires get killed. James Woods is MAJOR bad*ss. And that's what this film's about. It's not a black & white film noir. It's a freaking vampire slayer movie, with all the guts & hokey acting that a carpenter/corman/troma fan needs to get off on. And the cinematography and effects are the best i've ever seen in a vampire flick.
The action in the movie is some compensation for horrible acting. Woods imitates who knows which 'tough' guy (Bruce Willis?), spits out vulgarities (to be tough???) just as many others in the movie. The plot is ridiculous, if not plain stupid, barely anything is scary, and the whole ending is absurd.
the best movie i've ever seen!7/27/1999
you have to see this picture to believe it. don't miss it.
John Carpenter's Vapid-pires7/26/1999
I have enjoyed almost all of Carpenter's prior work. From 'Halloween' to 'The Thing' and even 'They Live'. However this vacuous film is in complete dissary. The acting is awful. Worst of all, nothing happens in 100 minutes. Nothing! For instance, it takes Baldwin & Woods almost five minutes of screen time to steal a car!! I don't mind a sluggish pace (after all I enjoyed 'They Live') but this is ridiculous. All of the supposed plot 'twists' you can see a mile away. I have made it my personal mission to warn as many people as possible about this complete waste of time. And thus, you have been warned.
Beats your standard vampire movie by far. Visuals and special effects are superb. Acting is great, Griffith is terrifying. Well worth the time to watch, twice.
Beautiful visuals (I love the southwest), good FX. Listen to the music and see if you can see the Dusk Till Dawn influence …
