Prince is my soul mate, he's my other Jimi Hendrix

by Rose Enlow on 12/1/2003

I am probably Prince's most devout mavin. In my eyes he can write no wrong. I had almost every tune he ever recorded, but it was on cassette and they are easily expendable. I am trying to establish a CD collection that lasts longer. Anyway I don't think, I KNOW Prince is the reincarnation of my other soul mate Jimi Hendrix. So i guess it doesnt matter what Prince writes or records, I love it all. I understand the understatement of it all. Any time one man can produce as much music, and as many lyrics and ryhthms (all different I might add)as this "ONE-DER", it is inevitable that someone like me would 'pick up' on his genius immediately if not sooner, if everyone doesnt see him as the singular amazement that he is then its their loss. Prince....if everyone else dropped off the face of the Earth I would be left hanging on the the edge of humanity, waiting for you to compose some unique song solely for me. To me and for me, you are the only artist in my heart. 500 and still writing, if you produced a CD of still air I would purchase it. You will always have a devotee with me on this planet. Do your astounding thing Baby!!! Read More

Product Overview

This is the "greatest hits" album we've been waiting for: all of Prince's biggest hits packed onto one disc. Arguably the most influential artist of the '80s, Prince is one of the very few musicians of this or any other era to find a massive and intensely loyal audience while still being praised by critics and musical contemporaries alike for his bold experimentalism and prodigious instrumental skills. His brash, high-NRG mix of pop, rock, funk, and psychedelia picked up where Sly Stone left off, and the result was music that was revolutionary in its sonic experimentation and provocative fashion. This collection brings together the absolute best of Prince's Warner Bros. recordings - perhaps the most important recordings since the '70s - on one hit-jammed disc.

Considerably more streamlined than previous compilations THE HITS 1 and THE HITS 2, the 17 songs that make up THE VERY BEST OF PRINCE offer a nice tour through the Purple One's chart successes for Warner Brothers from 1978 to 1993. Mixed in among chart toppers like the quirky "When Doves Cry," Hendrix-fueled mania of "Let's Go Crazy" and stripped-down funk of "Kiss" are enough brilliant moments to make you wish the guy had focused more on music and less on the identity shifts that characterized most of the '90s.
Starting with the 1979 #1 "I Wanna Be Your Lover," Prince's pop sensibilities and inquisitive nature have found him cleverly bouncing back and forth between the twin poles of sex and spirituality. Whether it's the runaway pledge of faith found in "I Would Die 4 U," sly lasciviousness of "Gett Off" or battle-of-the-sexes throw-down with Sheena Easton on "U Got The Look," this Minneapolis native's way with a hook makes more of an impression in retrospect than his ability to shock. Other highlights include the millennial jam "1999," chilling view of the world "Sign O' The Times," gorgeous "Diamonds And Pearls" and irresistible "Alphabet Street."
Artist Overview
The word "genius" may be used a little too freely when describing pop musicians, but many would have to agree that Prince is deserving of such an accolade. Since his 1978 debut album, the Minneapolis-based multi-instrumentalist/songwriter/singer has scored numerous hits with his sexually charged, original funk/pop/dance/rock style, penned big hits for other artists, and has even tried his hand at acting as well. In the early 1990s, Prince's name-changing antics and his messy break with Warner Brothers overshadowed his music, but his extensive back catalog of amazing songs has secured his place in musical history.
