"Tracy Lawrence

Tracy Lawrence first rose to fame when he was signed to Atlantic Records after being spotted appearing at a talent showcase at Nashville's famous Bluebird Cafe. The title track of his 1991 debut album Sticks and Stones proved to be his first #1 country single, and the LP delivered four Top 10 hits in all. The follow-up, 1993's Alibis, reeled off a remarkable quartet of #1 smashes: the title cut, ""If the Good Die Young,"" ""Can't Break it to My Heart"" and ""My Second Home"" - the latter two were also co-written by Lawrence. Most importantly, the acclaimed album sealed Lawrence's reputation as one of the '90s most consistent and beloved country hitmakers.

In addition to the aforementioned #1s, this essential 21-song collection features the chart-toppers ""Texas Tornado"" and ""Time Marches On."" Spanning 1991 - 2004, the disc's highlights also include Lawrence's signature songs ""Stars Over Texas,"" ""If the World Had a Front Porch"" and his most recent Top 5 hit, 2004's ""Paint Me a Birmingham."""

A self-proclaimed hellion growing up in Arkansas, Texas-born Tracy Lawrence turned his raw energy into a potent musical force that topped the country charts seven times over. Lawrence's distinctive sound blends the influences of his heroes - including George Strait, Keith Whitley, Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard - with an appreciation for southern rock and the very best qualities of contemporary country music's new traditionalist movement, which he helped to define. Powered by his rich, unmistakable baritone, Lawrence's songs can have you cutting up the dance floor or help you nurse your heartache - and everything in between.

Muze PNote Starting with 1991's STICKS AND STONES, Texan Tracy Lawrence has taken up the mantle of honky tonk for a new generation of country artists. As Nashville has moved further towards pop and rock influences, Lawrence's fierce traditionalism has caused him to be squeezed out of the picture a bit; Lawrence has been without a major label contract since 2004. Rhino's excellent THE VERY BEST OF TRACY LAWRENCE is a 21-track pr?cis of that 13-year period, picking tracks from all of his Atlantic and Warner Brothers albums to paint a picture of Lawrence as the modern heir to the likes of Ray Price and Lefty Frizell: a honky-tonker who knows his way around a tear-stained ballad as well. The well-chosen selection contains all of Lawrence's biggest singles, including all seven of his number-one hits.

Artist Overview

Beginning in the early 1990s, it seemed as though Georgia-born Tracy Lawrence couldn't release an album or single that didn't sail right to the top of the U.S. country charts. Lawrence takes a no-frills, honky-tonkin' approach to songwriting, yet still remains firmly planted in contemporary Nashville. And the deceptively deep cowboy poetry of his lyrics, hearkening back to such outlaw-country greats as Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings, has endeared him to both a new generation of country music fans and the Nashville establishment.
