Piece of junk - Don't buy4/22/2011
This media player looks nice and the interface is fancy but it does not recognize my NAS Media Server. I could not even list all of the media files on my server. Worst of all, there is no way to delete files from the network server (there is no file manager option on the menu). I have ready upgraded the firmware to the latest. Buyer beware - DO NOT BUY. I am returning mine.
Died after 2 weeks12/25/2010
Bought this to stream Netflix and free up my laptop! Ran well enough for the first couple of weeks, bought the Zonet USB NIC. Software response is a bit sluggish but I was generally happy with the streaming. Them the unit started locking up, powering it off and back would get it working again. Upgraded the firmware which "seemed" to fix it until it stopped booting up completely. Light is one but won't go green. Didn't get a chance to play with the other features, Web browsing, file shareing ,etc.. waiting on a replacement to see if this is just a one off failure.
Samba is broken, but UPnP works12/7/2010
I screwed around with viewsonic "support" a few times and jumped through all of their hoops. They do not seem to have an answer for why Samba (windows shares) do not work. After 2 firmware update, entering full samba paths, etc. I admitted defeat. Before packing this up to send it back, I thought I'd look to see if I could run a UPnP Server on my Linux box. This works just fine for me! UPnP saved a return. Hopefully, Viewsonic will finally release a patch that works and I'll be 100% happier. Or maybe we'll root this thing and install a better client... who knows. Bottom line: If you need to access files on your Windows/Samba Share, and you can't/won't run UPnP, skip this product. Otherwise, it plays NetFlix, YouTube, MKV files pretty well.
Absolutely Not Ready For Prime Time11/17/2010
Pros: - Great price through Buy.com - Excellent streaming of NetFlix movies - USB supports a USB hub so you can hook-up a keyboard, mouse and a USB drive Cons: - Network connectivity is non-existent under Windows XP - you cannot connect to the MP3s or Images or Videos that are stored on your computer. It just doesn't work (as of this writing). - Web Browsing is very difficult unless you hook up a USB wirless mouse & keyboard (which works well). Even with a mouse & keyboard, browsing is painfully slow and the browser lacks support for FLASH videos and other advanced browser features. - YouTube app is awful - UPnP does not work with Windows XP - Adding movies/programs to your NetFlix que can't be done from the unit - you must access NetFlix from a computer to add programming. Conclusion: If all you want is an inexpensive easy wasy to add NetFlix to your TV, then this could be a good solution. If you want to be able to access the music, photos and videos on your computer, forget it. Don't expect any of the other built in apps to satisfy your desire for connectivity and/or network streaming.
VMP75’s and had to return it11/17/2010
I bought one of these VMP75’s and had to return it b/c I could never get it to see my network shares. I had read reviews indicating it might be a problem but figured I could figure it out since I hack these things all the time. I spend several hours even sniffing the wire to try and figure out what was going on. Their tech support is clueless and not any help. Be where. On a positive note Buy.com refunded my money and paid for shipping it back. I buy lots of stuff from Buy.com, guess a dud once in awhile is expected.
