I received this Viewsonic just a couple days ago and am loading several 512MB SD cards (it takes larger ones too) for my mother-in-law to look at family pictures. It worked great right out of the box (no assembly)! The menu system is a little hard to get used to, not very intuitive, so it took me longer to get through the many options it contains. I wish it would keep the original orientation of the photo, as it takes a landscape photo and presents it vertical if it feels too much of the photo is missing. :( The SD card protrudes out farther than many might think necessary but for an elderly person it is easy to grasp. Cord is WAY to short, another foot or 18" would have been nice.
This is actually a very nice gift item for almost any occasion. Bought one last month, thinking of getting another one soon. Here are a few things that I liked:
1. Easy setup - put in an SD card, turn it on, and away it goes.
2. Calendar and clock built in - you can view the calendar/clock below the pictures or have the pcture take full screen, or show the calendar on top of the picture at the bottom.
3. Timer feature that turns it on and off on a schedule.
What I don't like so much:
1. It is mainly for portrait viewing. You can set it up landscape, but then calendar/clock gets be turned off. Not a big deal - I like that its portrait.
2. It does not auto-rotate images (almost no e-frame does it at this price point)
3. Takes a few seconds to turn on and off
Really the things that I do not like are just nitpickings - it is a nice bright screen - images look good on its size and it is thin, light and does not seem out of place on any desktop.
All-around excellent quality consistent with ViewSonic's reputation. 800x480 resolution is very decent, certainly higher than most of the low-end off-brand models, in the 7" category.
The only disappointment I have is the lack of support for staging photos in multiple folders, and activating a certain folder for slideshow. It appears all the pictures in the only folder would be shown.
I've got it during the Christmas sale last year (2012) for about half the current price and I never regret about these $$ spent. The quality of the screen is very good, and the resolution is comparable to a laptop screen. The only disappointment was that the buttons are rather small and hidden behind the device, so it is not easy to find which button to press to make the desired action. Otherwise it has a useful calendar, slideshow, and it senses the ambient light and goes into the deemed clock mode when it get's dark (and wakes up with the slideshow with the sunrise). Apparently it has some built-in memory, but it is much easier to use it with an external SD card (not supplied).
