Editor's NoteOne of the most successful westerns of American television's "Golden Age," THE VIRGINIAN was adapted from the classic 1902 novel of the same title by Owen Wister. It starred James Drury as the title character, a taciturn, enigmatic fellow who forced his own grassroots brand of "law and order" on a small town in the Wyoming Territory during the 1890s. Standing nearby were the rowdy young cowhand Trampas (Doug McClure) and a succession of owners of the local Shiloh Ranch, including Judge Garth (THE EXORCIST's Lee J. Cobb), brothers John (Charles Bickford) and Clay Grainger (John McIntire) and Colonel Alan McKenzie (Stewart Granger). The program earns a footnote as the first 90-minute televised western in U.S. history. Season Two originally aired from September 18, 1963 through May 6, 1964 and contains thirty episodes, all of which appear in this box set. Installments include A MATTER OF DESTINY, SMILE OF A DRAGON, DARK DESTINY and A MAN CALLED KANE.
