Whether you want everything imaginable or just the hits, wading through freestyle compilations can be treacherous. The gaudy packaging and the thrill that comes with discovering a rare gem or two -- amidst plenty of throwaways -- are two characteristics that can be charming in a way, at least for those who have a voracious appetite for freestyle. But even those people will be bugged by the amount of overlap from disc to disc. Others will be left frustrated in their attempts to find that one definitive compilation, the one that contains all the singles they could possibly want. Masters of Freestyle is one of the better sets running, even if it shuffles a fair amount of tracks available on dozens of other compilations. Highlights of the first volume (redundantly subtitled "Freestyle Masters") include Pretty Tony's "Jam the Box," Lil Suzy's "When I Fall in Love," Debbie Deb's "When I Hear Music," and Trinere's "Rockin' to the Rhythm." ~ Andy Kellman |
