Editor's Note
One of the most popular science fiction series of its day, this program from the early 1960s was based on a movie of the same name, also directed by the "Master of Disaster," Irwin Allen. David Hedison stars as Captain Crane, the brave and fearless leader of the vessel Seaview. He and his crew go on dangerous missions which often find them saving the world and battling fierce monsters. Season two features the first episodes to be shot in color!

DVD Talk 9 of 10
...the real draw to Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea is the Seaview itself and the wonderful weekly eye-candy production design, action and suspense, no matter that much of it is pretty ridiculous. The Seaview doesn't remotely resemble a real submarine but that was never the point - it's really just a full-size, gigantic toy, every boy's fantasy...Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea may not exactly represent television's finest hour, but this DVD is one of the biggest kicks of 2006 so far, a blast from the past that, thanks to some fine mastering and a nice sampling of extras, make this a must-have for children of all ages. - Stuart Galbraith, IV 7 of 10
Many people, including myself, have fond memories of this TV series from younger days, and depending on your tolerance for cliches and campy action, that fondness can be sustained with DVDs as the 4 year run finally gets released. The problem with "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" (1964-1967) was the blessing and curse of having producer Irwin Allen...The potential of this kind of undersea "Star Trek" is great enough to have resulted in some entertaining if not good episodes, and a remake of sorts was seen in the research submarine series "SeaQuest DSV" (1993-1996) which made a curiously comparable devolution from multilayered military missions into badly written monster and aliens stories. One difference would be that "SeaQuest" took real scientific advice for its show (from the Woods Hole Oceanagraphic Institute), while Irwin Allen never seemed to bother with science beyond mindless 1950's style pronouncements of strange things with unique properties, like a dangerous new explosive element or a gas that makes you grow big. - Carl J. Schroeder
