W.C. Fields was often very understated and dry in his humor (probably the only time "dry" would apply to him) so his films bear repeated viewings. This collection has very good prints and sound, and is very rewarding for Fields fans. The cafe scene in "Never Give a Sucker an Even Break" is a classic, and the whole surreal plot is a fitting last film for the obviously booze-ravaged star. If you enjoyed the Volume 1 collection, Volume 2 is a must. Read More

WC Fields Rides Again

by Steve Mac on 11/3/2008

Vol 2 continues the excellent collection of high quality copies of 5 more WC Fields movies + 1 extra. The movies seem complete with scenes I don't remember from watching the films on TV. The extra is a copy of a TV show from the '50's saluting WC with scenes from movies not in this set. Highly recommended - high quality at a great price for all WC fans or a good chance to become one. Editors Note
Note With a wit to rival that of Oscar Wilde, W.C. Fields was a singular comedic talent. No one can pull off drunk and delightful with the alcoholic aplomb Fields possessed in spades. This anthology of his films includes the classics MAN ON THE FLYING TRAPEZE, NEVER GIVE A SUCKER AN EVEN BREAK, POPPY, YOU'RE TELLING ME!, and THE OLD FASHIONED WAY. Fields fans will particularly enjoy the surreal comedy of NEVER GIVE A SUCKER AN EVEN BREAK. The actor plays himself in what turned out to be his last film and some of his best work.
Film Comment "TRAPEZE tops off this collection, but deep diggers may be further rewarded by the more hellzapoppin' highlights of NEVER GIVE A SUCKER AN EVEN BREAK..." 05/01/2007 p.77

Review [Old] Made to order for W. C. Fields and permitting him to do his old cigar-box juggling among other things, The Old Fashioned Way is light comedy material that will please the Fields followers...Joe Morrison is worked in for songs with suitable spots provided for him during the Drunkard sequence. Morrison's voice registers well and on the love interest he carries himself through satisfactorily. Romantic side of the story [by Charles Bogle (= W.C. Fields)] treated lightly but has its place as fitted in, Judith Allen holding up the other end adequately.

Review [Telling] I've always been a little disappointed by this W. C. Fields comedy. It's one of those where he places his character in a thoroughly domestic situation, which is actually a very interesting thing to do from a character perspective. The persona of W. C. Fields as a somewhat misanthropic low-life is challenged when he plays a married man; he mainly wants to drink with his friends and to tinker with his inventions, but he's compromised by having to squelch his own personality so that he can get along with his wife and to help his daughter (who he truly loves) to win the man of her dreams. It's a fairly sophisticated type of character comedy, and even though he never plays for sympathy, you care for him.

Dennis Schwartz, Ozus' World Movie Reviews [Never] Refreshingly bizarre.
Sanderson Beck, Movie Mirror [Telling] The antics of W. C. Fields offer comic relief as the snobbery of wealth and class is satirized...
Vadim Rizov, Movie Vault [Old] ...brisk entertainment that's smart and, at the end, full of heart.
