After waking from a coma in an abandoned hospital, police officer Rick Grimes finds the world he knew gone - ravaged by a zombie epidemic of apocalyptic proportions. Nearby, on the outskirts of Atlanta, a small encampment struggles to survive as 'the dead' stalk them at every turn. Can Rick and the others hold onto their humanity as they fight to live in this terrifying new world? And, amidst dire conditions and personal rivalries, will they ultimately survive one another? AMC’s The Walking Dead is an epic, survival adventure series from the director of The Shawshank Redemption and the producer of The Terminator and Aliens.

"This dark gem of a show about a zombie apocalypse gleams with hellfire incandescence.  Glenn Garvin, Miami Herald
"A film-quality drama series about zombies? Somebody pinch me!  Heather Havrilesky, Salon
"...packs a raw, emotional punch while delivering the creepy and queasy thrills.  Matt Roush, TV Guide

Editor's Note
All six episodes from the brief but successful initial run of AMC's THE WAKING DEAD are collected on this release. The show concerns a police officer who wakes out of a coma to discover that a zombie causing plague has swept through the world. He sets off to find his wife and child, and soon falls in with a band of survivors attempting to keep the flesh-eaters at bay.

Expert Review The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season - DVD Review

Robert Kirkman's Walking Dead comic series has been running strong for over seven years now, slowly becoming as iconic as the arts that inspired it. Gunshot survivor Rick Grimes has skulked an epic path across the mostly deserted southeastern United States, leading the central ragtag survivors from one dangerous situation to another. With a basis in Kirkman's excellent story arcs and a location change from rural Kentucky to big-city Atlanta, the transition from the page has far fewer pitfalls than I could have dreamed. Because yeah, maybe I dreamed about the full review

Wall Street Journal 10 of 10
The best would be AMC's "The Walking Dead," which has a pilot episode so good that it has hooked even a zombie hater like me...Many standard elements of the genre are here. As usual, zombies are attracted by noise so that hiding from them takes on an added dimension of terror lest a stray cough or clang summon the mob. What makes "The Walking Dead" so much more than a horror show is that it plays with theatrical grandeur, on a canvas that feels real, looks cinematic and has an orchestral score to match...For all its set pieces, however, "Walking" is most breathtaking in its small moments, in which the pain and glory of being human are conveyed with only the flick of a filmmaking wrist. We know this series can be something special early on, when Deputy Grimes encounters a crawling zombie too wounded to join the other "walkers." It's just a ravaged head and arms, really, dragging an exposed rib cage and skeletonized legs along the ground as it mewls horribly. In that moment, Grimes can only feel compassion. "I'm sorry this happened to you," he says, before putting a bullet in its head...No one who sees it will forget the part when, after the extent of cataclysm becomes clear, Grimes suits up in a clean uniform and sets out to find his family. Eventually, his cruiser's gas runs out and when we last see him on the road to Atlanta, he's clip-clopping down the abandoned freeway on a horse. On his cowboy-style deputy's hat, a gold badge is gleaming in the sun, as are the golden tassels of the hat band that rest smartly on its brim. These last vestiges of civilization, both old and new, will be gone soon. We know that. But there's an irresistible urge now to go along for the ride. - Nancy DeWolf Smith
