Product Overview

An overlooked landmark of 70 s American cinema Barbara Loden s Wanda is a radical revisioning of the road movie genre. Writer-director Loden stars as Wanda a troubled young woman adrift in a modern-day industrial wasteland until she embarks on a crime spree with a small-time crook (Michael Higgins). Bracingly honest and beautifully shot Loden s unique film deserves to be counted among the most formidable debuts in the history of independent cinema. Format: DVD MOVIE. Genre: DRAMA. Rating: NR. Review This slow, honest film tells of a young woman (Wanda) with little sense of personal worth or agency. Because Wanda isn't sure what she wants to be doing from moment to moment, she simply drifts along, and finds herself catering to the whims and desires of others. The satisfaction she finally finds in assisting her new lover with a bank heist shows how desperately Wanda longs to prove that she can be useful. You'll be frustrated by her character, but also intrigued and hopeful. As Peary points out, the film has the look and feel of a grainy documentary made with a hidden camera.

Review This most impressive dramatic character study directed, written and starring Barbara Loden, the wife of Elia Kazan, won the Critics Prize in Venice in 1970. It's a low-budget grainy film shot in 16mm and blown up to 35mm; it's set in the Scranton, Pennsylvania, coal area. This was Loden's first film as director and unfortunately she never made another before dying at the age of 48 of cancer in 1980...This intelligent and original film is a prime example of the great films truly indie directors can make and how difficult it is to get these films into theaters, as the studio bosses instead peddle to the country inferior films under the weak excuse that those are the kind of films the public prefers.
