| The debut from these Canadian thrash metal innovators is raw and brutal, bearing little resemblance to the well-oiled machine that emerged years later. Though distinctly different from the refined prog metal of the band's 1989 masterpiece NOTHINGFACE, Voivod's early primal rumblings were part of the initial wave of thrash progenitors that included the likes of Bathory and Venom. | |
| With the reissue of this album, Metal Blade pays homage to Snake and company with a three-disc collector's package that includes the remastered WAR & PAIN, along with lo-fi demos and live tracks culled from 1983-84. A third disc includes liner notes, artwork, a video, photos, and computer wallpaper and screensavers. Die-hard fans will be pleased with the homage paid to the early works of Voivod, whose roster would eventually include ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted, a longtime aficionado of the group. | |

Artist Overview
Acclaimed Canadian metal outfit Voivod helped pioneer speed and thrash metal in the early 1980s. By the release of 1987's KILLING TECHNOLOGY, the always challenging band had successfully integrated into their sound and overall aesthetic a prog-tinged explicitly sci-fi element, which distinguished them as a forward-thinking metal band that still maintained ties to its blistering roots. The band developed a solid, loyal fanbase through the years, which was only strengthened by the addition of former Metallica bassist Jason Newstead in 2002. The band even released their self-titled 2003 album on Newstead's own Chophouse label.
