The author of the gripping bestseller "The Perfect Storm" turns his brilliant and empathetic eye to the reality of combat. "War" follows a single platoon through a 15-month tour of duty in the most dangerous outpost in Afghanistan.
From the Publisher:
Offers an on-the-ground account of a single platoon during its fifteen-month tour of duty in the most dangerous outpost in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley.
Annotation:
In the tradition of the best war correspondents, Sebastian Junger places himself among a platoon of troops stationed in the dangerous Korengal Valley region of Afghanistan in order to find out firsthand what combat is really like for American soldiers. His account of their 15-month tour of duty, as they train, fight, and interact--with each other as well as with the people of the region---conveys the soldiers' expertise, their camaraderie, and their great sacrifices. And, like the best war reporting, WAR fills in the gap between policy and reality, making concrete those things that leaders and commentators merely espouse. The author of THE PERFECT STORM has written what may prove to be the definitive account of an important phase of the Afghanistan War--and its warriors.
Author Bio
Sebastian Junger
Sebastian Junger attended Wesleyan University, where he studied cultural anthropology. He struggled for many years as a writer while holding down low-paying, low-prestige jobs waiting on tables, working in construction, and cutting down trees in people's backyards. The germ for what was to become THE PERFECT STORM was a newspaper article about a fishing boat disaster. Junger wrote an outline which he showed to publishers, reportedly receiving a $35,000 advance. THE PERFECT STORM was on the New York Times bestseller list for over 120 weeks and was made into a feature film in 2000. Junger is a widely sought-after writer and is able to select his topics, preferring articles on human rights and foreign locales. He has been associated with Vanity Fair magazine and the National Geographic. Junger moved to Manhattan in 1995, invested in a bar with some friends, and maintains a house on Cape Cod, which is where he wrote his bestseller.

Expert Review War by Sebastian Junger - Book Review

War, Sebastian Junger's account of one American platoon's experience fighting in a remote outpost in the Korengal Valley in Afghanistan, is intended to give readers an idea of what war is really like for the soldiers on the front lines. It is based on Junger's experiences as an embedded reporter, and it has all the advantages that first-hand gives a writer, but it also has its disadvantages, and unfortunately at times the disadvantages seem to outweigh the advantages....read the full review

Praise

"[An] absorbing and original if sometimes uneven account....Junger has found a novel and interesting lens through which to view the conflict in Afghanistan, and he captures many things a lesser writer might miss." - Dexter Filkins 05/16/2010
