Author Bio
Molly Bang
An author and illustrator, Molly Bang has lived in Japan, India, and China and has degrees in French and Oriental studies. Two of her books, THE GREY LADY AND THE STRAWBERRY SNATCHER (1980) and TEN, NINE, EIGHT (1983), were named Caldecott Honor Books. She is also a reteller of folktales such as WILEY AND THE HAIRY MAN. Bang is known for matching the style of her artwork with the style of the story she is illustrating. For example, THE PAPER CRANE--the story of a Japanese beggar who rewards a kind man with a magic paper crane--is illustrated with cut-paper collage and origami.
Praise
Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
"Bang has captured a young child's uncontrollable eruption of anger in both language ("She kicks. She screams. She wants to smash the world to smithereens.") and images (when Sophie "roars a red roar," she really does). In the scenes where Sophie's rage is impetus, the objects in the hotly colored illustrations are outlined in a flaming orange-red; as Sophie calms down, the outline changes to a soothing pink, then to cool blues and greens, and finally to the cheerful yellow outlines of the domestic scenes." - Janice M. Del Negro April 1999
