From the Publisher:
Eighteen-year-old Lia feels she is being haunted by Cassie's restless spirit when her best friend dies from anorexia--the same disorder Lia has been struggling with.
Annotation:
Although anorexia, bulimia, and cutting are major issues in Laurie Halse Anderson's most haunting novel since SPEAK, they are rarely named. More powerfully, readers are steeped in the slowly unraveling mind of Lia, who is intent on cutting and starving herself out of existence. After Cassie, Lia's childhood best friend commits suicide in a motel room, just days after trying to call her 33 times, Lia retreats into herself more than ever. Stunning, lyrical writing and an understanding of the capacity teen girls have for self hatred showcase Anderson at her best. Hints of dark fairy tales, Persephone, and ghosts permeate this young adult masterwork. Selected by Publishers Weekly as one of the Best Children's Books of 2009.
Author Bio
Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie Halse Anderson grew up in Syracuse, New York. Ever since she was a young girl, she loved to read books. Even though she tended to read many books at once (a habit that she still has!), her favorite book was J.R.R Tolkein's THE HOBBIT. Now that she's a role model for many young aspiring writers, Laurie has three important things that she thinks kids who want to write should know: 1.) Read everything you can get your hands on, 2.) Be kind to your English teachers, 3.) Don't be one of "those people" who just talks about being a writer--BE a writer! It seems that Laura followed her own advice, because her first young adult novel, SPEAK, was nominated for the 1999 National Book Award for Young People's Literature. When Laurie found out that she had been nominated, she felt "stunned, honored, grateful, giddy, bewildered, amazed, thrilled. And happy. Very happy." Laurie feels that the highest reward any author can receive is to know that he or she has written a good story. Besides this award-winning young adult novel, she has also written three picture books: NO TIME FOR MOTHER'S DAY, TURKEY POX, AND NDITO RUNS, all of which were received with praise. Laurie's favorite writers are Chris Crutcher, Francesca Lia Block, Karen Hesse, Karen Cushman, and Robert Cormier. A fun fact: her grandfather was a forest ranger.

Praise

"As events play out, Lia's guilt, her need to be thin, and her fight for acceptance unravel in an almost poetic stream of consciousness in this startlingly crisp and pitch-perfect first-person narrative. The text is rich with words still legible but crossed out, the judicious use of italics, and tiny font-size refrains reflecting her distorted internal logic." 02/01/2009

"As difficult as reading this novel can be, it is more difficult to put down." 01/26/2009

"Anderson...has written a fearless, riveting account of a young woman in the grip of a deadly illness." - Barbara Feinberg 05/10/2009

"Anderson flirts with Francesca Lia Block territory here...The book vividly captures the relentless, automatic measuring of the food-obsessed...." 03/01/2009
