Read Between the Lines.
In the projects. On the docks. In City Hall. In the schools. And now, in the media. The places and faces have changed, but the game remains the same.

Times are tough for the detail. Mayor Carcetti has slashed the departments budget to the bone. Police are operating without overtime, some without cars and radios. Angered, McNulty is off the rails again and headed down a dangerous path of deception and lies that will ally him with an unscrupulous reporter. The drug trade still rules the corners, all you have to do is read between the lines.

This four disc collection includes all 10 episodes from The Complete Fifth Season of The Wire!

"...one of the most demanding and thought-provoking series ever to grace television.  Brian Lowry, Variety
"...I loved every minute of The Wire...  Elizabeth Skipper, DVD Verdict
"One would be hard-pressed to find another series that blends the personal and the political in such a kinetic yet thoughtful way.  Entertainment Weekly
"...so magnificently executed, so fascinating in its evolution, so frequently bracingly profound that it does no less than elevate the medium of television itself.  Movieline's Hollywood Life
"...the best show on television, period.  Tim Goodman, San Francisco Chronicle
"As challenging social commentary, compelling character study and magnificently detailed drama, The Wire is peerless.  Ultimate DVD
"Four stars. Brilliant.  USA Today

Editor's Note
The fifth and final season of THE WIRE excavates yet another layer of city life: the media. As budget cutbacks for both the police and the press threaten their public missions, they also gives rise to corruption. Show creator David Simon (a former Baltimore reporter himself) interweaves the story of a young journalist faking stories for the Baltimore Sun with that of Detective McNulty (Dominic West), who concocts a serial killer in order to funnel funds to an underground investigation of drug dealer Marlo Stanfield (Jamie Hector). As always, the show's superb cast of characters--including a late appearance by stickup artist Omar Little (Michael K. Williams)--and sharply drawn institutions influence each other in ways that lay bare the determining forces of society; few television shows would attempt it, and fewer still would succeed. As THE WIRE comes to a close, some loose ends are tied up while others are left dangling. It's a testament to the show that it honors life's lack of resolution rather than the tidy, and ultimately dishonest, wrap-ups of most cop shows.

Expert Review The Wire: Season Five - DVD Review
By: Eric Meyerson filmcritic.com DVD Reviews

Millions of hearts broke when season four of The Wire reached its bleak conclusion. The cause of this mass cardiac disintegration was twofold: first, most of the teenage boys in the season's primary storyline seemed doomed to nasty and short lives. And second, the single greatest work of dramatic television in the history of the medium had come to an end. That couldn't be easy for anyone's emotions....read the full review

Professional Reviews

Empire
5 stars out of 5 -- "Creating a microcosm of a broken nation, THE WIRE remained, to the very last fade-out montage, as messy and often painful as life itself. Believe the hype: this is a masterpiece..." 10/01/2008 p.178

Sight and Sound
"The Baltimore-set show remains among the most completely accomplished and uncompromisingly ambitious dramas of recent years." 10/01/2008 p.98
