At age 16, Rhine Ellery has four years to live. Thanks to a botched effort to create a perfect race, all females live to age 20 and males live to age 21. On the cusp of her 17th birthday, Rhine attempts to flee, but what she finds is a society spiraling out of control.
From the Publisher:
After modern science turns every human into a genetic time bomb with men dying at age twenty-five and women dying at age twenty, girls are kidnapped and married off in order to repopulate the world.
Considered THE HANDMAID'S TALE for young adults, this dystopian novel is set in a world where men die by the age of 25, but women only have until 20. Polygamy is widely accepted, as there is a great desire to keep the population up. Kidnapped to be the third wife of Linden, who is much swayed by his terrifying father, 16-year-old Rhine Ellery is torn from her twin brother, Rowen, and confined to a mansion. There, she experiences unimaginable wealth, but is expected to get along with her sister wives and bear children with Linden. Soon, she uncovers his father's disturbing experiments and looks for a way to escape. This is the first book in the Chemical Garden series.

Apparently, it happened when scientists were trying to discover a cure of cancer and other degenerative diseases. They found a way to genetically engineer fetuses so that all the babies would be born strong and healthy and immune to any disease. It worked great, and the first generation all grew up and grew old and never got the full review
