Review Attempting to convey a macro vision of Sept. 11 through a micro lens, Oliver Stone is to be credited for presenting this challenging, fact-based story with admirable restraint, a quality that has not always characterized his past directorial efforts. Yet these events -- which require no dramatic embellishment -- by their nature result in a claustrophobic film, as two port authority cops lie buried in rubble struggling to survive. As such, "World Trade Center" yields lovely and touching moments but proves a slow-going, arduous movie experience, if more uplifting than Universal's earlier test of that historic day's box office potential, "United 93."

Review Last spring's brilliant "United 93" was a stomach-churning, unflinching look at September 11th though a chronicle of tragedy and murder. It was devastating and unforgettable filmmaking. Oliver Stone uses an alternative path with "World Trade Center," dramatizing a singular event in the middle of all the destruction and pain to help remind the world that there was still hope at large, even in the eye of the hurricane..."World Trade Center" does have moments of unbearable horror for more sensitive viewers, but there is a dominant mood of optimism in the middle of all the debris that is more than worth the time invested in this perfectly executed historical drama.

Review Turning back the calendar to the morning of September 11, 2001 is a risky proposition for any director, and not to be undertaken lightly. Paul Greengrass succeeded brilliantly with his United 93 and now Oliver Stone, never one to back away from a challenge, has decided to tell another story under the 9/11 umbrella. His film, World Trade Center, comes unencumbered by the director's baggage. There is no political message. There are no conspiracy theories. And the camerawork is straightforward, lacking the over-the-top flourishes that have hampered some of the director's recent efforts. World Trade Center is Stone's most potent motion picture since Platoon, and may be the most accessible across-the-board since Wall Street.
