Product Overview

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is an action-adventure featuring a true-to-character Wolverine gameplay experience that takes gamers through and beyond the movie's storyline. Set in a variety of vivid real-world locales, the title challenges players to hone their animal instinct as they uncover hidden dangers, hunt and destroy enemies, and take on seemingly insurmountable situations while discovering the truth about Wolverine's tragic past. With razor-sharp adamantium claws unsheathed, the future X-Man enacts lightning-quick combat, evasive maneuvers, in-depth combo attacks, and an array of brutal finishing moves. Wolverine doesn't just deliver massive damage, either – he also takes it, thanks to his mutant regenerative power that heals him in real time right before the player's eyes.

Review It's hard to believe that Wolverine (aka James Howlett, aka Logan, aka Weapon X) first appeared in comics over 30 years ago. It's even harder to believe that the character voted "#1 Most Popular Comic Character" by Wizard magazine took so long to get his own video game during the last few console generations. Well, it's here now and it is excellent...Like most people, I approach games based on movies with mixed feelings. On the one hand you have the opportunity to play with the characters and settings that you so enjoyed from the film. On the other hand, these types of games have a long history of being released in a buggy, unfinished state, pushed out the door to make sure they coincide with the film's release date. Well you can lay your fears to rest on this count. While X-Men Origins: Wolverine isn't perfect, this title has been polished to a shiny adamantium sheen...The biggest advantage that this title has it that it actually isn't a true movie tie-in. As strange as it sounds, Raven software has had this game in development for quite some time and it really is a finished product that is being released. Another advantage for all us gamers is that this title is not just a rehashing of the movie. The game and the movie use a common background story for Wolverine's origin, but approach it from different angles and emphasize different sections of the back story...A movie-based game that is well done and relatively problem free? X-Men Origins: Wolverine is definitely one of the more pleasant surprises of the year. While it does have some minor issues here and there, the gameplay is addictive and enjoyable, with an appealing story line that you won't want to see end. Best of all, this title stays faithful to the comic book canon, and gives us insight to one of comicdom's favorite characters. Without doubt, this is one title that is well worth your gaming dollar.

Review Oh, videogames based on movies based on comic books. To the casual consumer, you're a "must buy" because the movie was awesome, so clearly the game will be even better. To the seasoned gamer, you're a title with more potential for a train wreck than Miley Cyrus at 18. When I first heard that X-Men Origins: Wolverine would be storming the streets alongside the Hugh Jackman talkie, my eyes involuntarily rolled and a sigh escaped my lips. Would this be another botched gaming opportunity for one of comic books' greatest heroes?...The answer is a definitive "no," accented by an adamantium claw to the face. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is some of the most violent fun I've had in a long, long time. It's far from perfect, but it's going to be a bloody blast for Wolvie fans...In this game, you're going to behead bad guys, tear people in half with your claws, hack off arms at the shoulders, gut soldiers and shove a man's head into the moving blades of a helicopter. For fans who have scoffed at the number of slices it has taken to drop a bad guy in previous Wolverine games, this is the holy grail. What makes all of these moves impressive is the fact that you can do them pretty much at any time. Sure, there are Rage moves such as a claw spin and temporary damage boost, but you could go the whole game, not use those garnishes and still get the same amount of blood and destruction...Should any of the criticism I've launched keep you from playing X-Men Origins: Wolverine? No, this is an awesome guilty pleasure. Usually, I'll sit down to review a repetitive game that's filled with the same attacks and just tear it apart because the repetition sucks the fun out of the experience. X-Men Origins has repetition in spades, but it's the kind of repetition Wolverine/action game fans are going to love; I mean, can you get sick of literally slicing someone in two and watching the blood explode across the screen? Can you get sick of hoisting a bad guy in the air and savagely stabbing him in the gut over and over again? Can you get sick of watching Wolverine get beaten down to his adamantium skeleton only to sit there and marvel as his muscle and skin grown back in real time? I can't...The story is convoluted, the bosses are boring and the whole experience isn't that deep, but this game sure is fun.

Review Finally, an X-Men game that does the character justice. Expectations are typically fairly low for movie-licensed games that don't target children but fortunately Raven Software defied the odds. Their M-rated adaptation of the PG-13 film pulls no punches in delivering a truly powerful character and empowering you to step into his shoes...As expected, you'll play as Wolverine in a story that follows and expands on the events in the film through five chapters that should last 10-12 hours. The game's story stands out as being less developed than the other aspects. It isn't always clear why you are where you are or fighting someone, especially at the beginning, which moves you around different time periods in succession. This is probably to avoid spoiling too many details of the film and while a bit confusing doesn't detract from the gameplay. While the game doesn't have multiplayer, the 10-12 hour campaign and unlockable hard mode encourage a second play through...Aside from the nearly endless possibilities of combos, the game's combat is nuanced in other ways. As you progress through the game, you'll be required to change your strategy since the same combos (or mindless button-mashing) aren't the most effective methods for latter enemies. There are also environment- based attacks that you can execute such as impaling enemies into a spike or throwing them towards an exposed electrical charge box. You'll also see finishing moves from time to time where Wolverine will kill the enemy in truly gruesome ways. You'll see claws going into skulls, limbs and torsos being torn apart, heads going through blades, and more. The violence is well done and never over the top, but the sheer amount may surprise fans familiar with other superhero games, especially since the film is rated PG-13...Visually, X-Men Origins: Wolverine looks pretty good. Wolverine himself is a faithful recreation of Hugh Jackman, with great animations and details, including real-time damage that exposes the character's muscles and even skeleton as you take damage. The other Marvel characters all look great, as do the enemies you'll take on, although the models become a bit repetitive after a while. The game's environments are all technically competent but the indoor ones suffer from being plain-looking and nearly indistinguishable from one another. In terms of sound, Wolverine again is the highlight thanks to Jackman's voice acting. The other sound effects are suitably strong, too. It's clear that nailing Wolverine was Raven's software, which makes sense given that the game bears his name...X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a superb action game especially for fans of the character. This is the Wolverine game that fans have been waiting for. It's not incredibly varied and a lesser game would have suffered because of this but Wolverine is just incredibly fun.
