Author Info
Usually listed as the third major historian of Ancient Greece, after Herodotus and Thucydides, Xenophon's contributions go beyond historiography--he is regarded also as an essayist and man of letters. Born into a wealthy family, he served in the cavalry on campaigns in Asia Minor and rose to the rank of general. His HELLENICA, which consists of 7 books, some of which is a continuation of Thucydides, is a history of 4th and 5th century Athens. He knew Socrates and wrote about him. He was a citizen of Athens until he served in Spartan army. For his military achievements he was rewarded with an estate, where he lived and wrote books on hunting (CYNEGETICUS), horsemanship, and estate management (OCCONOMICUS). The latterdetails family life on an estate and is perhaps his most autobiographical work. He also wrote a book on military strategy and leadership. Perhaps his greatest contribution was a work on education, the CYROPEDIA. Xenophon was particularly liked by later Romans for his conservatism. He was exiled to Corinth, then returned to Athens.
From the Publisher
Editors Note An essential text for understanding Socrates, Xenophon's Memorabilia is the compelling tribute of an affectionate student to his teacher, providing a rare firsthand account of Socrates' life and philosophy. The Memorabilia is invaluable both as a work of philosophy in its own right and as a complement to the study of Plato's dialogues. The longest of Xenophon's four Socratic works, it is particularly revealing about the differences between Socrates and his philosophical predecessors.
