This pack is recommended for any fan of good movies, especially if you're into Leone's Westerns. The DVD package is great as well. Criterion delivers once again with the high quality transfer. There aren't any real special features but the commentary is very insightful. Highly recommended. Read More

Product Overview

Thanks to perhaps the most indelible character in Akira Kurosawa's oeuvre, Yojimbo surpassed even Seven Samurai in popularity when it was released. The masterless samurai Sanjuro, who slyly manipulates two warring clans to his own advantage in a small, dusty village, was so entertainingly embodied by the brilliant Toshiro Mifune, that it was only a matter of time before he returned in a sequel. Made just one year later, Sanjuro matches Yojimbo's storytelling dexterity, yet adds a layer of world-weary pragmatism that brings the duo to a thrilling and unforgettable conclusion. Criterion is proud to present this pair of Kurosawa masterworks in new, high-definition anamorphic digital transfers.

Review [Sanjuro] Short and sweet. If you haven't seen Yojimbo, go rent that before this. If you haven't seen Seven Samurai, go rent that before Yojimbo. And once you've done those two, graduate to Sanjuro...As said before, the fighting isn't the object. The twists in the tale and the performance of Mifune bring so much more to this film, and the two previously mentioned, than Hollywood is capable of today. This movie won't be for everybody. It's black and white, it's old, and it's subtitled, but it's something you can't and won't look away from.

Review [Yojimbo] Yojimbo was made at the end of Kurosawa's most fruitful period of movie-making. Over the span of eleven years, he crafted more than a half-dozen memorable motion pictures, beginning with Rashomon and including such classics as The Seven Samurai and The Hidden Fortress...There's a sense of symmetry surrounding the development of Yojimbo. The movie was conceived and designed as an homage to that most American of films - the Western. From the empty, windswept street stretching the length of town to the arrival of the stoic stranger, images familiar to viewers of '40s and '50s Westerns abound...It is fair to say that, without Yojimbo, certain key aspects of Western cinema would not be the same today.
