Editor's Note
Sean Connery returns as Agent 007 in YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE. With the Soviet Union and the United States blaming each other for mysteriously missing space capsules, nuclear warfare between the two superpowers seems imminent. However, Her Majesty's Secret Service suspects the rockets are being held in the Sea of Japan and assigns James Bond to fake his death in order to go undercover. Believed to be dead by the public at large, Bond travels to Japan to track down the missing U.S. and Russian space capsules. Racing against the nuclear clock, 007 discovers that the maniacal Ernst Stavro Blofeld (Donald Pleasence), the luscious Helga Brandt (Karin Dor), and their terrorist organization SPECTRE have planned to incite a full-scale global war. With the help of Japanese agents Aki (Akiko Wakabayashi), Kissy Suzuki (Mie Hama), Tiger Tanaka (Tetsuro Tamba), and a slew of ninjas, Bond must once again save the world from nuclear obliteration.| |For his first directorial take on a Bond movie, Lewis Gilbert draws on storytelling techniques from his previous films ALFIE and THE 7TH DAWN (quick cuts, long aerial pans), rendering Roald Dahl's clever script with a fluidity not seen in previous 007 films.

"...It's one of the series, and Connery's, best..." 11/01/2000 p.106

ReelViews 7 of 10
Forever remembered as the "Japanese Bond", You Only Live Twice takes 007 to the Far East for his fifth screen adventure, Sean Connery's final consecutive appearance as the top British agent (the actor returned to the role twice more: 1971's Diamonds Are Forever and 1983's Never Say Never Again). Unfortunately, this is also among the weakest of the early Bond films, although Connery is in peak form...Nevertheless, any Bond movie with Sean Connery can't be all bad, and there are the usual chases, fights, and amazing stunts -- all sprinkled with a dash of Japanese flavoring...Then there's the usual assortment of women, both European and Asian, for Britain's most dashing secret service agent to romance. In short, while You Only Live Twice falls somewhere in the middle of the 007 film heap, it still offers that unique brand of wit, style, and adventure that only comes with Bond. - James Berardinelli

DVD Verdict 9 of 10
You Only Live Twice is unfairly maligned; people accuse Connery of boredom and they find the action fantastical. Those claims can be supported, but You Only Live Twice is a landmark in the series. It is the first Bond film with a mostly original script, and it is the film that establishes the template for later films in the series. Some argue that You Only Live Twice was the turning point that plunged the series into larger-than-life action fests. I am here to prove that this film provided for the longevity of the franchise. The great Bond girls, impressive sets, charismatic characters, and envelope-pushing action don't hurt...You Only Live Twice has a different feel than other Bond movies. It is surrealistic, a convoluted puzzle. There are valid criticisms to be made of You Only Live Twice, but it is easy to miss the strengths of it. - Rob Lineberger
