Review Zodiac is a police procedural - a sort of souped-up, ultra-long episode of Law & Order. Based on the 1986 "true crime" book by Robert Graysmith, the movie looks back on one of the nation's most sinister unsolved crimes: the Northern California serial killings by the so-called "Zodiac killer"...The performances, like Fincher's direction, are competent. Jake Gyllenhaal is understated as usual, but that's appropriate for his low-key character. As Graysmith's obsession grows, Gyllenhaal comes alive. Mark Ruffalo is very good at being petulant but has trouble with sincerity. Robert Downey Jr. once again plays the flamboyant rogue with alcohol/substance abuse problems...Ultimately, however, the length and uneven pacing are stumbling blocks with which an audience must contend. Patient viewers will be rewarded; others may wish for something with less subtlety and more verve.

Review David Fincher's Zodiac is a terrific thriller, but not for the reasons one might have expected from the director of Se7en and Fight Club. Cool and analytical where those films were fervent and provocative, it reinvents one of the most overused subgenre in all of American cinema, the serial-killer movie. And it does so not through overly obvious technique or even radical story innovations, but through subtle adjustments in perspective that shift the focus from the serial killer's methods and moral impulses (the approach taken by Saw, Se7en, etc.) and toward the tools used by reporters and cops tracking the murderer. This, of course, moves Zodiac into another familiar genre, the police procedural, but Fincher and screenwriter James Vanderbilt show so much disregard for cop movie conventions that their film ends up having more in common with All the President's Men than Dirty Harry--even though Dirty Harry was based on the real Zodiac killer case.

Quotes
Maitland McDonagh, TV Guide Fincher gets it all right..."Hurdy Gurdy Man," which bookends the story, has never sounded so hauntingly menacing.
Manohla Dargis, The New York Times Rarely has a film with so much blood on its hands seemed so insistently alive.
Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly ...stoically gripping, police-blotter tone, yet it begins to take on the quality of a dream.
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone A mind-bending, nonstop mesmerizer of a movie...
Scott Tobias, The Onion A.V. Club ...the rare serial-killer movie in which the psychosis stems as much from the pursuers (and the filmmaker) as the pursued.
