Customer Reviews of ZyXEL X550N 802.11n Gigabit Wireless Router
Just what I needed4/22/2011
I bought this router and the 3205 WAP that I put into repeater mode to upgrade my old Linksys set up. I had a little issue linking the 3205 to the router so I called the help line. I had quick and thorough support that helped me get the entire system up and running. I have 3 computers and iPad and wireless print server in the main house connected to the router. In the remote building I have 4 computers connected to the repeater and everything runs great. My only issue is that one of the remote PCs is a MAC and it fails to re-authenticate for some reason (I have to manually do this each hour or so which is a drag). I think this is an apple issue though, as none of the PCs have any problems like that. I would certainly buy this gear again. BTW, I am running WPA2 security across the entire network.
I'm minimally qualified to program a VCR but was able to install this wireless modem with ease. My first attempt failed; however, I read the instructions on the second attempt and had no problems. The quality seems good and I have fantastic reception throughout my 2 story house. I'm very happy with the product.
I bought this in Oct '09 and have had no problems. It works just as described. It was easy to setup and easy to manage with interface.
I got a lemon1/15/2010
Have to return this unit. Tried wire connection from multiple computers, LED light shows OK but no connection from computer. Contact support and they claim that there could be interference from my cable modem. But I tried disconnect from the modem and reset this router, still no luck. Give up after 2 days. Brought TRENDnet TEW-639GR from buy.com instead, works like a charm.
Wireless Has Problems1/8/2010
I bought this unit in October. It set up easily. However, the wireless regularly drops the internet access but LAN connections continue to work normally. PCs connected with cables have no problems. The unit was replaced by the ZyXel, but the replacement unit has the same problem. I wouldn't buy this product knowing what I know now!
Purchased ZyXEL X-550N. It just took less than 5min to complete the set-up for two computers. Shipping is super fast, I got the wireless router next day, that too free shipping. Great deal with rebate.
Excellent wireless range and speed.5/3/2009
Purchased to replace older Belkin Pre-N wireless-G router. Basic setup and connection was painless. Router is 60 feet away and signal is going thru 3 walls, one of which is brick. Wireless connection went from 54 Mbps on G to 130 Mbps on N using a Rosewill wireless-N adaptor. Wired connection on 2nd computer is 1.0 Gbs. Set up with WPA2 security and AES encryption. Speed only limited by my internet connection. No disconnections or need for rebooting since connected 2 weeks ago. Great deal with rebate.
Great product and support4/20/2009
I've had a wired 100 mbps home network for about 6 years now with 4 newer computers that have 1000mbps. We recently got a Netbook with the new wireless "N", So we decided to upgrade the network to the new standard. I bought the X550N ( due to the specs ) and had a little trouble installing it. I called ZyXel. The tech rep was great, he walked me thru the whole setup, including the wireless security and firmware update. The X550N itself has been running flawless since, and we have the strongest signal in the area. ( yes, we have it WPA2 & WEP secured ) With this example of support, I'll make my next router and other networking products ZyXel. I'm very happy with the X550N and thier support. ( thanks Mark )
Super fast, excellent coverage. First class router4/13/2009
I bought this router to replace the old Linksys g router. I know Zyxel because my phone company uses their DSL modem. The X550N is indeed a first class router. It is super fast, both wireless and wired. I connect the desktop, NAS with gigabit connections. The file transfer is so fast, I can quickly transfer movies back and forth. The laptop I use has a wireless N adapter, I found I can watch 1080i HD movie via wireless connection with no problem. Not to mention my roommates are also on wireless with this router at the same time. My friend has a Dlink wireless N gigabit router; he said the Dlink cannot do the same thing. The coverage is great, too. There was once I use the laptop to connect to this router while I was in my car in the parking lot. I was able to surf the Web and send and receive mails with no problem. Consider there were about 15 parking spaces between my car and my home. I will recommend this router to anyone.
ZyXel X-550N Wireless Router, Fantastic Choice3/17/2009
The ZyXel X-550N router is like any other product that ZyXel makes.... it is very reliable and works right out of the box... literally. Remove it from the box, install the three antennas. Don't use the CD that comes with it, the CD just causes more problems and issues that are not necessary. All you have to do is plug in the POWER, LAN, and WAN cables, press reset and you are instantly on the Internet and broadcasting wireless signal through out your home or small business. The signal is picked up by other wireless devices with Excellent Strength. Overall this ZyXel router is the best I've ever used. It never lags or slows down. I have 4 computers hooked up and all utilizing the network and Internet. The ZyXel router handles all the traffic very well. I have used almost every major brand of routers over the years and they all could not touch the strength of this one. If you purchase a ZyXel X-550N you will be very pleased and glad you did. I hope this helps you make a good decision in your wireless router search.
I'm very pleased with ease of setup and performance. With cable modem and gigabit ethernet switch, I am running four mac computers (hardwired), one Macbook Pro (wireless), and a slingbox, with no discernible slowdowns. Use Cat 5e or Cat 6 cables for maximum speed.
I want to talk about my experience with X550N. And yes, I have a X550 and used it for a year. No trouble at all. The coverage is great that I forced myself to come up a long passphrase for WPA2 setup so my neighbors don't jump on my wireless network. X550N has even better coverage!! Not to mention my desktop downstair gets 280 Mbps speed all the time. My wife upstair uses a high power 802.11g client adapter and gets 48-54 Mbps. Both of us can stream movies from our home NAS server to our computers at the same time. Now that is performance! Another thing to mention is this router come with two IPSEC tunnels. Normally products with this feature will cost you another $100.00 or so. So you can connect to corporate network with VPN. I don't use it, but I recognize the value.
I bought this as a replacement for Zyxel 550 extreme. I like my old 550 because it is very solid and stable. The setup was not friendly though but once you passed the setup you've got your self a working router forever. Now to this X-550N: Like any product that Zyxel makes it is also very stable and solid. The menus are very easy step by step kind of setup. This router also has once touch wireless configuration in case you have one of those cards or laptops that support that feature. I never used it before. I like to enter codes and configure the network manually. One thing I should mention though I did not find any signal strength increase from my last upgrade (this may be due to I do not have any N compatible devices. Only B/G). This one supposed to have better coverage and it is not any better than the last Zyxel I used. The obvious difference is the ease of setup menus like I mentioned earlier. It may make a difference if you have Wifi N cards but I can't tell. Overall Zyxel routers are the best I've used sofar. They never lag or clog. At times I have more than 10 computers hooked up and all utilizing the network and the internet heavily and the zyxel routers handle all the load very well. I have used almost every thing else (Major brands from the store) and all failed in about one year strangely one or two months after the expiration of the warranty. Zyxel is the only brand that lasted with me and I only upgraded "just to upgrade". My old one is still working after three year of heavy use. I hope this helps you make a better decision.
