The Best Destinations for Fall Foliage This Year

Summer may be over, but that doesn’t mean you’ve missed the chance to take a trip with family and friends. Fall is just as good a time to get away for a week or two. Fall is my favorite time of the year: the chilly temperatures, stylish outfits, pumpkin-flavored everything and, of course, the changing leaves. We’ve rounded up some of the best destinations to see the fall foliage this year.

Afton, Virginia

If you want to take a long, gorgeous drive during the fall season, look no further than the famous Skyline Drive. It’s roughly 105 miles of beautiful autumn views, with red, orange and green leaves covering the scenery. You can even get a high-point view, since this drive goes through the Blue Ridge Mountains. Go at your own pace and make as many stops for photos as you want by renting a car through companies such as Thrifty Rental Car or Budget Rent-A-Car.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jackson Hole is known for its many popular ski lodges that open in November, but it’s also worth a visit earlier in the fall when it’s less touristy and offers some colorful mountain foliage. You’re also only a short drive from Yellowstone National Park. We recommend the luxurious Jackson Hole Four Seasons Resort and Residences, which you can book through Tripadvisor.

Sleepy Hollow, New York

The spookiest time of year calls for a visit to a town made famous in one of America’s most legendary ghost stories. Aside from the scary attractions that pertain to “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” the town itself is brimming with culture and history — and it’s gorgeous during the fall. You’re also just over an hour from New York City, another great destination for the season.

Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

The Columbia River Gorge acts as a border between Oregon and Washington. It’s beautiful to visit year-round, but especially during the fall. You can hike Mount Hood to see all the orange and red leaves your heart desires and numerous waterfalls to fill your Instagram feed with peak fall content.

Aspen, Colorado

Named after the trees of the same name, Aspen is a prime spot for fall-lovers. During autumn, Aspen’s trees turn into a perfect yellow-gold color you have to see to believe (online pictures don’t do it justice!). You can also take in the colorful scenery with a brisk hike on one of the town’s many trails.

Baraboo, Wisconsin

Just about anywhere in cozy Baraboo is beautiful during the fall, but the main attraction is Devil’s Lake State Park and its excellent hiking trails covered in yellow leaves. If you’re ready to brave the chilly temperatures during the fall, Devil’s Lake is also home to many great camping spots. Don’t forget a tent and sleeping bag!

Bar Harbor, Maine

Bar Harbor is a sight to see for anyone obsessed with fall. The small town resides on Mount Desert Island along Maine’s Frenchman Bay, where you’ll get a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean surrounded by autumn colors. Bar Harbor’s downtown area is full of shops and hotels, so plan for a couple days to explore and book a stay through Expedia or Hotels.com.

Stowe, Vermont

Stowe has been nicknamed Fall’s Color Capital, and the title is rightfully earned. Leaves on every tree around town turn vibrant shades of red and orange. Take a scenic drive through the countryside, book yourself a spot on the Stowe’s Fall Foliage Boat Tour or plan another experience through Viator.
