10 Easy Houseplants That Won’t Die On You

True confession: I once owned a pre-planted tin that promised a lily. It came with a little packet of fertilizer and simple instructions. Water it. Occasionally. Well, that thing didn’t even sprout, and I can’t blame it. I passed by it about thirty times a day, thinking, “Oh yeah, I have a plant now, I’d better water that.” Maybe two weeks later I threw the tin away and the soil was bone dry. At least if I’d put it outside in the yard it would have had a fighting chance.

Are you like me? There are some easy care houseplants that can thrive even under your not-watchful eye. Read on to discover ten plants that are easy to keep alive. These houseplants need barely any attention at all, and they’ll survive even with your busy schedule. I do suggest watering them, occasionally.

Aloe is a super beautiful plant and reminds me of a cactus. Even though its soothing gel suggests moisture, it needs barely any water. Just make sure it sits near a sunny window. It’s such a useful plant to have during the summer!

Mother-in-laws Tongue, or snake plant, isn’t as vocal as your actual relation, but it is particularly resilient. This is good if you’re looking for a low light indoor plant and if you’ve got a dry climate. They can grow very tall and slender in the right pot.

Succulents are my favorite plants– they have many diverse looks and look like little buds. I love an array of succulent pots; they’re almost like pets. Speaking of pets, these are safe for cats and most pets. Check out these gorgeous succulent dishes that could be a beautiful side table piece.

If you don’t have kids or curious pets around, cacti come in a huge variety of colors and forms and are super fun. They are one of the best low maintenance plants as they don’t need much other than some light and some rare watering.

Pothos will creep around and are fun for hanging plants that frame an area of the bookshelf or windowsill. The vines will grow 10 feet, and you can easily clip and transfer to grow new plants.

Dracacena, a bamboo, is one that’s particularly hard to kill, making it a great low maintenance plant. One type, the dragon tree, can grow to be very tall. Their stalk can twist and curve around a steadying pole.

Monstera looks like something out of a lush jungle, but surprisingly it needs very little water or light. This easy indoor plant makes a dramatic impression in your living room.

If you’re really having trouble with remembering to water even with these, maybe experiment with this self-watering planter from Amara (they have tons of cute indoor planters!). Lowe’s also has a great selection of planters and plants, along with Cash Back when you shop with Rakuten

Most of these require minimum care, and some should have soil dry to the touch or feel light before watering. When you notice leaves that are browning on the edges or turning yellow when they shouldn’t be, that’s a sign that something is wrong, perhaps overwatering or needing fertilizer. Good luck!
