Are you itching to hit the slopes this winter but aren’t sure where to go? More importantly, are you looking to save a little cash on your ski vacation? You’re in luck. Below, I’ve rounded up a handful of top-rated ski resorts and added some tips on how you can save before and during your stay. Hint: It’s Rakuten.
You may not be able to book lift tickets with Rakuten at the resorts below, but you can certainly save on your airfare, hotel and a car rental. It pays to check Rakuten travel and compare rates, especially on flights to these popular ski resorts.
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, WY
Jackson Hole is consistently rated one of the top ski resorts in the country for good reason. It’s a technical skiers paradise with a number of challenging runs, but there’s a little something for everyone in this winter wonderland. You’ll save big if you’re comfortable staying in Jackson instead of Teton Village. It’s a 20 minute drive that could save you hundreds, even thousands, depending on how long you stay. There’s plenty to do in town. I suggest Pinky G’s Pizzeria followed by a trip to the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar for a nightcap.
Aspen is, well, Aspen. It’s a skiers dream with more than 5,500 acres to explore. There are four mountains in a relatively small area that are ready for adventure. You’ll probably save the most on your flight to this popular destination, but you can also take advantage of Aspen Snowmass’ lift ticket packages. Often, you can ski five days for the price of four, which is a huge savings if you’re taking the whole family.
Heavenly is located next to Lake Tahoe in California. Skiers flock to this beautiful resort from all over, especially in the springtime when conditions are still prime for hitting the slopes. It’s one of the few places you can ski in the morning and go wakeboarding or swim (if you’re brave) in the afternoon. It’s a more affordable resort when compared to the others on this list. Rooms start at $119 a night, but you can save 20% if you stay five nights or more.
Arapahoe Basin is a lesser-known mountain near Breckenridge ski resort, as well Copper Mountain, which is widely loved by skiers. It’s also far more affordable than its counterparts at an average of $60 per lift ticket. You can save up to 50% on single day passes if you’re visiting another mountain and want to spend a day at A-Basin. When I visited Arapahoe Basin, I loved the trails and how free-form they were. It’s like a choose your own adventure book in mountain form.
Big Bear Mountain Resort is truly special. It’s a highly skiable mountain with terrain suitable for all skill levels, and it’s only a few hours from Los Angeles. It’s definitely an experience if you’ve never been. The drive is surreal as you make your way in from Los Angeles and watch the temperature drop. In a short time, you trade palm trees for fresh powder. The views are gorgeous, and the skiing is even better. If you pre-purchase your lift passes, you can save 20%.
Keystone Ski Resort is owned by the same people behind Vail, Breckenridge, and others on this list, but it’s a unique resort that’s loved by skiers for its 128 trails, fresh powder and some of the longest ski days in Colorado. There’s also a huge kids park with a snow fort. Rates start at $129 per night, but you’ll save even more the longer you stay. You can also save 10% by bundling lift tickets and your room during your stay.
