Fast accurate scanner fits in briefcase
I purchased the Ambir DS487 Duplex A4 ID Card & Document Scanner at Buy.com's eBay site for a great price. This scanner is basically the same as the ScanShell 3000DN, and includes a convenient leather pouch (or a material that looks/feels identical to leather in my estimation) with drawstring. The whole setup is very nice because it's feather light, narrow, will fit in a briefcase (or woman's purse). The only drawback is the AmbirScan software that comes with it doesn't seem to work (and seems primitive) but that's okay. This drawback is compensated by the sophisticated, feature rich, Windows Vista compatible driver (that conforms to standard Windows conventions with tabs and selectable options). The Ambir DocketPort 487 driver (you must download and install this driver from Ambir's site), is accessible in most software such as MS Word 2003. (In Word, position the cursor in the document where the scan should appear, and select Insert menu > Picture > Scanner or Camera, then insert sheet to scan face-down, select Insert or Custom Insert (depending on whether you want to simply scan, or use advanced duplex and other features). The inserted document quickly scans with impressive color and clarity, and the image is inserted into the Word document. (Many other major software packages have the same feature, where you scan an image into the document in lieu of importing a graphics file, or just press the button on the scanner to pop the driver interface on your desktop.) The Custom Insert option lets you scan a double-sided or single-sided image in one pass, and adjust the scan resolution, document size, brightness, contrast, gamma, highlight, shadow, black and white, grayscale and color settings, and calibrate or clean the scanner. (A cleaning cloth sheet comes with the unit.) Even my 9 year old nephew can use it, so easy. The scanner has a cute, functional stand with rubber feet to sit securely on a flat surface without sliding around while feeding a sheet into the slot. (You don't want to scanner moving while inserting paper or ID card, or it's difficult to align the object you're scanning.) Pushing a button on the scanner instantly calls up the screens that appear in applications such as MS Word 2003, without having to open one of these applications. You can save the scan in various formats such as TIF or PDF (or other formats if scanning into graphics programs). Using Adobe Acrobat Pro Extended, it took me approximately 90 seconds to scan a double-sided 6x9-inch double-sided color brochure, in one pass, into a two page PDF document (with each side on a separate page). During the 90 seconds the software automatically rotated clockwise by 90 degrees the brochure (inserted sideways) to the correct orientation for reading. Overall the quality, durability, speed, color correctness, precision of scan (no jags or misalignment if inserted firmly and evenly), and sharp clarity of resolution, is impressive. Portability with storage pouch makes this a killer travel companion. This will make a great travel 'fax machine' in conjunction with laptop and wi-fi connection!
