Review Iconoclastic Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier takes a break from his recent spate of ponderous endurance tests (Dogville, Manderlay) with the small-scale satire The Boss of It All, a clever look at office politics, technology, and the art of deception. Though it takes a while to get in sync with the movie's jumpy rhythm, the humor soon takes over and you might as well be watching a Francis Veber farce--which, in some respects, The Boss of It All resembles. Still, this being a von Trier work (he wrote as well as directed), it has none of Veber's French sunniness; it's stark and a little cold and, of course, cynical, which suits this offbeat workplace comedy just fine...Though the third act goes on too long, the film mostly moves quickly, enveloping you in its witty charade, and daring you to keep up with what's going on in Kristoffer's thespian brain. The film's off-kilter, mockumentary feel is enhanced by von Trier's use of a new computer-assisted camera system called Automavision that creates a kind of random framing for each shot. Like the movie itself, it somehow works.
