Ease of Use

I have now bought three of these, for various family members and I think it is well designed. It is simple to use, it plays a wide variety of audio and video formats as well as voice recording and the ability to listen to FM radio. So far battery life is quite good. It does organize music entirely by MP3 ID3 tags so get a good ID3 tag editor like JJ MP3 renamer or one of the many others available for free or low cost. The screen is said to scratch easily but if it is in a case or has a screen protector, I've not had seen any scratches. You can use it as a USB mass storage device, but not for moving music or audio. To put media on the device, you must use one of the software packages that come with it from Creative Labs or another Play4Sure compliant program like Windows media player, Musicmatch, or (I believe) Winamp. Firmware updates are available online at the Creative site and are easy to apply. I hope Creative will continue to produce and improve this player. It has many advantages over the Apple Ipod, but Ipod does have a much greater variety of aftermarket accessories available. It would be nice if Creative would produce a pin conversion to the Ipod pinouts so that many of the Ipod accessories would work with the Zen. Overall, a very well made product, but then Creative Labs has been in the computer sound business for a fairly long time. Note: new models of the Zen Vision M do not come with a AC charger and you must either purchase one separately or charge the device with the much slower USB cable supplied. I think this was a false economy on the part of Creative Labs. Wishes for future versions or firmware updates would include the ability to switch between organization by ID3 tag and organization by folder structure/filename and the ability to drop media files directly onto the player as a USB hard drive so that no additional software would be required.

I decided to go with the ZENm (as I call it) because of the reviews I had read. I have to agree with everyone. It is sturdier than an Ipod and very easy to use. I have only downloaded one video but I am impressed with the quality of it. My music sounds great and the bonus is, it has an FM radio. I am very happy that after some extensive research I went with the Creative Zen Vision:M 30gb.

Excellent Media Player

by Jason on 8/6/2006

This is a superb media player. High quality sound, mostly intuitive menus and software, and really really excellent video quality. The battery life is great, too. Here are the bad things: - it scratches easily (get a skin/case) - for MP3s, you can't browse by folder, only by artist/album/genre/playlist - no gapless playback

A much better buy than any iPod!!!

by Curtis ( on 8/8/2006

This thing is incredible!! I have been looking for a great MP3 player for a long time. When I first became interested in getting one, I was sure that I wanted an Apple iPod. When the players with video became available, I was even more anxious to get my hands on one. Luckily, I did a little research. The iPod is stylish, but looking good is the best thing that it does. This player beats the iPod in practically every area. First off, the Zen Vision:M can play four hours of video before its batteries die. The iPod only lasts for two. Though it is much thicker than an iPod, I prefer it that way. It feels very sturdy and well-built. When I hold an iPod, I feel like I could just snap it in two with one hand. Electronics become more convenient as they become smaller, but I believe that they can go too far. Who would want to carry around an MP3 player the size of a toothpick? Something that small would be very inconvenient; it could snap in two or get lost much too easily. That's why I like the Zen Vision:M; it is just the right size and feels great in your hand. Do a Google Image search to find pictures of a Zen Vision:M and an iPod side by side. You will notice that when both displaying the same image, the iPod's screen appears washed out. I am a huge fan of All In The Family, and I use it to take episodes wherever I go. I easily forget that I'm looking at such a small screen; video playback is amazingly smooth. The Zen Vision:M also has a built in radio and a microphone for recordingvoice notes or teachers' lessons. After you tire of your music library, you can record songs off the Vision:M's radio and save them for listening later. This player also supports virtually any song or video format, and even if it doesn't, chances are that the included software will be able to convert it. iPods can only play iTunes files, which really limits what you can put on it. The Zen Vision:M will NOT play iTunes songs, though I have found that I can use podcasts from iTunes to put on my player. All in all, this is a much better buy than an iPod. If you have any questions, send me an email and I will be glad to help you.
