Product Overview

Dallas gynecologist Dr. Sullivan Travis (Richard Gere) is a man juggling many, many women in both his professional and personal lives. The doctor of choice for the city's society elite, Dr. T is perennially overbooked and behind schedule, despite the efforts of his devoted chief nurse, Carolyn (Shelley Long). Now Dr. T's home life is boiling over, too; his beloved wife Kate (Farah Fawcett) has regressed into a childlike state as plans for the upcoming wedding of cheerleader daughter Dee Dee (Kate Hudson) are shifting into high gear. Adding to the chaos, Dr. T's champagne-loving sister-in-law Peggy (Laura Dern) has moved in with her three little girls, while Kennedy conspiracy-buff daughter Connie (Tara Reid) is sounding the alarm and outting Dee Dee's chosen maid of honor, the mysterious Marilyn (Liv Tyler). Overwhelmed, Dr. T begins spending more time at his country club's golf course, adding a new woman to his life--easy-going new golf pro Bree (Helen Hunt). Life is about to change for Dr. T, hitting him with the gale force of a Dallas Fall Storm.

Review Robert Altman would never admit this, but I believe Dr. T, the gynecologist in his latest film, is an autobiographical character. Played by Richard Gere with tact, sweetness and a certain weary bemusement in the face of female complexity, Dr. T works for and with women, and sometimes dares to love them. So it is with Altman, who is more interested in women than any other great director, with the exception of Ingmar Bergman...What holds the stories and the characters together is the decency of Dr. T, and Gere seems wholly comfortable with the role. He plays a good man of modest requirements and dutiful conscience, plugging away, trying to get his job done, trying not to be driven mad by Freud's unanswerable question, "What do women want?" Because this is a comedy, he even finds the answer, sort of.

Review As unpredictable as ever, Robert Altman delivers a gently provocative character study and social portrait in "Dr. T & the Women." Taking their own sweet time to paint an exceptionally detailed and often quite funny picture of the most rarified strata of Dallas society, only to detonate some unexpected land mines later on, Altman and his congenially matched screenwriter Anne Rapp wrap some stinging psychological and emotional observations in a beguiling package topped by Richard Gere's most accessible and sympathetic performance in memory...Upper-crust Dallas is superbly evoked through the uniformly luxurious but impersonal domestic, professional and country club settings and the near-risible extent to which the women doll themselves up to venture into the world.

A.O. Scott, The New York Times [Gere's] performance is relaxed and generous...Mr. Gere and Ms. Hunt are especially fine together.
Jonathan Foreman, New York Post Funny, smart and fascinating.
Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune It's a joy. Altman does Dallas the way he did "Nashville" in Nashville or Hollywood in "The Player."
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone Altman orchestrates Dr. T's odyssey with the precision, heart and lively wit of a virtuoso.
