Review If Napoleon Dynamite set the bar for teenage geekiness, then the New Zealand import Eagle vs. Shark offers a new criterion for the grownup Napoleons of the world. It is one thing to have an awkward adolescence, but when social dysfunction reaches into adulthood, it is not pretty. Certainly, it does not sound like a promising premise for a romantic comedy, and yet as embarrassingly clumsy as Lily (Loren Horsley) and Jarrod (Jemaine Clement) are in their interactions, there is also something appealing in their flailing attempt at true love. Forget Beauty and the Geek; The Geek and the Geek is a far more winning proposition...First-time writer-director Taika Waititi (a.k.a. Taika Cohen) developed his screenplay through the Sundance Institute, and one cannot help but wonder how much influence that American institution had on him. For while Eagle vs. Shark is thoroughly enjoyable, it is also completely derivative. Its resemblance to a more adult Napoleon Dynamite does not seem accidental. There is really nothing wrong with that--imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, after all. Horsley and Clement are delightful, and the film provides enough laughs, but it will be interesting to see what Waititi does next. He's proved that he has mastered comedy; the question is whether he has any originality.
