Review Years from now - no, six months from now - when people talk about the movie Fame, they won't be referring to the modern-day remake that opens today. Fame will remain the 1980 movie that spawned the hit song and the subsequent TV series. Yet, there are good things about this remake that shouldn't be ignored...Like the original film, this one tells the story of high school students at New York's School of Performing Arts, a highly competitive trade school for performers that kids from all over New York City attend to become professional dancers, actors and musicians. It's a place where either dreams are killed in the crib or start to become true, where kids find out if they have what it takes - and "having what it takes" isn't always fair. Some are naturally gifted, and things come easy to them. And some can work hard and never succeed...Debbie Allen, who appeared in the 1980 Fame, is back, this time as the hard-as-nails principal. The teachers, played by Charles Dutton (acting), Kelsey Grammer (music) and Bebe Neuwirth (ballet), lend the film gravity, the sense of people who know all about performer aspiration and who are very conscious whenever they're doling out encouragement or necessary pain. Particularly strong is Megan Mullally as the singing teacher, whose blithe manner conceals her own professional disappointment...The movie has two major flaws that come close to taking it down a notch. The first is that the kids aren't terribly interesting, possibly because 16- and 17-year-olds tend not to be all that interesting in real life, except to each other. And the big musical finale - the student's final project that, in this loosely structured film, stands in for a climax - is ghastly: Bad song, bad orchestration and bad choreography. But the singing ... the singing is good.
