Review Bobby and Peter Farrelly's raunched-out redo of the Oscar-nominated, 1972 comedy classic The Heartbreak Kid is, well, heartbreakingly disappointing. Finding a new way into Neil Simon's dark, provocative screenplay (inspired by a story by Bruce Jay Friedman) was no easy task. It took years of studio development, countless scripts (including whacks from Hairspray's Leslie Dixon and Old School's Scot Armstrong, both credited here) and finally a writing/directing commitment from the Farrellys to get the ball rolling. Given the result--a grating, poorly paced patience-tester--it wasn't worth all the effort. That's not to say the movie, like the Brothers' surprise smash There's Something About Mary, won't have its fans and become a box office hit--lots of folks may find it hilarious. I just wasn't one of them...Sure, everyone likes a good sex gag or nutty pratfall, but please make them funny--really funny--not just eye-popping trailer moments. At this point, you'd think the Farrellys would be beyond the rash of needless gay jokes that litter their new movie like first-draft placeholders. But they're not. And that exact lack of creative inspiration is at the root of this Heartbreak Kid's frustrating laziness and junky guffaws.

Review Combine the Farrelly Brothers (Bobby and Peter) with Ben Stiller, a Cameron Diaz lookalike, and a copious dose of bodily fluids in a raunchy romantic comedy, and what do you get? Not There's Something About Mary II, that's for sure, although that was probably the producers' hope. The Heartbreak Kid, while not without its share of tiny, ephemeral pleasures, is a surprisingly flat and unamusing comedy. The film skews toward the dark side, but black humor is often the most difficult to successfully capture and in this case the Farrellys (with a small army of screenwriters, working from the framework of a 1972 script penned by Neil Simon) don't get it right. The occasional laughs provided aren't frequent enough or uproarious enough to warrant an investment of nearly two hours of a viewer's time...There's a bizarre segment that functions as comedic social commentary on America's immigration policy that, while arguably the most original aspect of the movie, doesn't seem to belong. After that, the story plods along aimlessly until it stumbles into a resolution defined by a cheap twist that is meant to be funny and ironic but isn't either. By the time the end credits roll, there's a sense that we should already be home watching TV or reading a book.

Quotes
Desson Thomson, The Washington Post You can expect to fall about, snort and hoot, at times hard enough to hurt inner body parts that only doctors can identify.
Lisa Nesselson, Variety Uproarious romp, grounded in believable if gleefully implausible human behavior, is a model of comic timing.
Pete Hammond, Maxim An outrageously hilarious comedy!
