Review While the filmmaker has lots of experience under his belt, there's a sense that he's unwilling or unable to break new ground from his previous film. But while you do feel that you've seen this before, it's hard to get too upset, because the film is so well-made and -acted that it's totally captivating. The middle part of an unofficial trilogy (the final film begins production this year and is being scripted by novelist Shuuhei Fujisawa), The Hidden Blade is worthy of being loved by foreign-film buffs and samurai-film geeks alike.

Review The Hidden Blade'' is exquisite to look at. Seeing shots of snow falling, the whiteness of each flake almost blinding, and of delicate cherry blossoms, you understand the inspiration for generations of Japanese screen painters.Reminders of feudal Japan are mixed in with a prescient glimpse into the country's future. The samurai will not be part of it, and The Hidden Blade'' poignantly shows what is lost in the name of progress.
