One of the best Sci-fi novels out there
I am usually pretty picky with sci-fi novels, only really enjoying a few writers in the genre (Aasimov, Herbert, Bradbury, Card) being mostly a fantasy buff. I have read other works by Simmons and this guy can genre hop like no one else. From his horror to his science fiction he is top notch. Hyperion is easily one of the best books I've read in a long time. I am a sucker for great characters and Simmons creates some amazing ones in this novel. His writing style is top-notch and makes you want to keep reading. You won't find yourself trudging through this novel, the people, places, and plot(s) will keep you going. Simmons has created a very unique and interesting setting, from his technology to biology. It's all highly interesting and creative. I don't want to get too much into the story because thats why you read a book right? It follows the lives of six pilgrims traveling to a planet called Hyperion to find the Shrike which is a creature, god...you never really know. As many have stated it has a very Canterbury tales feel to it because of the six stories you will experience. Keep in mind this is the first of two novels so the story is cut short. There are a total of four novels in the Hyperion series, but the last two take place many years after the first two. Anyway, if you're looking for the next great science fiction novel this one will be well worth your time.
